he is a batting AR. doesn't need to avg >40. An avg of around 37-38 + 2-ish wkts per match will be enough. Moreover, it's not just about avg, but about contributing in tough situations. He has done that in most tests he has played in his career. 60 in BGT 2021, the 96* vs Eng in 2021, the 50 right now. And there have been 20-30 runs where he remained not out because he came too far down the order.

 

Anyway, I recall you were bringing this up from 2021 itself, so it's not new to me/us.

Much better team than the current one but one change - a pacer in place of Kotian. You can't play a Test in Aus - even SCG - with only 2 front line pacers and that too when Bumrah is already exhausted. Need to play Harshit in place of Kotian though I would've preferred Mukesh.

We have "King" Kohli hogging the spot averaging 30 over the last 5 years with only 3 100s which were all "fill your boots" 100s. Sundar or anyone for that matter would be a huge upgrade over that useless passenger. At least Sundar won't run out our best batters every other match.

These performances suggest that he can be a good #6 like Stokes or Shakib. But batting above that is not worth.

They have not done a great job for us.

 

We need batters who can avg 45-50 at #4 and #5.

King should be dropped. But my point here is that Sundar shouldn’t bat as full fledged batter at 4, it’s too high. We need prolific run scoring batters at that spot. Sundar isn’t that.

days of 45-50 are gone for most teams. only the peak 2-3 batters in a side can hope to achieve this range.

Ideally we can have likes of Jurel, Rinku or Sai Sudarshan taking that spot but I think we're discussing the squad selected for this series. In the longer run I agree Sundar is batting 2-3 spots higher than he should but in this series I wouldn't mind seeing him bat 4 or 5.

 

It's unfortunate we lost NZ series at home and will probably lose this winnable series and not make WTC Final all thanks to the two leeches who've held us back time and again.

Against NZ we lost tactically as well, it was like the unlosable 2023 final :facepalm:

Too much has been made of their batting, but tactically both RGS & BRat have been worse than brain dead zombies especially in LO cricket  :whack2:

Let's keep him at 6. We need to look for batters in top 4-5. ARs and keeper can start from no. 6 onwards.
