fineleg Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I am not asking about Ubuntu etc etc. Specifically between Vista and XP, pls. vote and if possible write a brief note as to why? I know some will say "I like NEITHER". But if possible, relative to each other, try to pick one that you like.
Gambit Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Ubuntu or Leopard. Between the two MS products, definitely XP. Vista is pretentious and bulky but from what I've heard and seen snippets of, the next MS OS is going to have the same effect as Win 95.
Cricketics Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 i like the look of vista, but hate when my computer stucks. i definately hate the timer of vista, that round circle which keeps taking round after round and doesnt go away.. vista is basically slow and hasn't improved. but yet i like to use vista beause of it's look. but if i am free and would sit on net for couple of hours for time pass, i am gonna go with XP. no freezing nothing..

THX_1138 Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I have toiled with both 62 bit Vista Ultimate and 32 bit Vista Ultimate and have another computer running 32 bit XP Professional. Since all three machines were formatted an the OS loaded from scratch using geniune licences, i was able to remove all the pre loaded crap and dumb accessories like Vista desktop etc etc. All three are quick, have not been stuck ever, though Vista has its advantage that it is easy to use with Remote Access... whereas file sharing is a lot easier on XP; since file sharing on Vista requires an account password (something XP doesnt require). Finally, i have had only one incompatibility issue, Nero 6. however, i installed Nero 7 and it works like a charm. Moreover, i have the complete Acrobat Adobe package, and while my older one, the 2003 version is incompatible with Vista, the latest one is just fine! In the end, its a Sophie's choice to be honest, but Vista has some extra browning points for a more pleasant interface.

Lurker Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I bought a laptop late last year. At the time I had choice between Vista and XP. In fact I remember paying a bit more for XP. I ultimately went with latter since it was lot more stable at that point. Vista was getting bugs left right and center. Given a choice I will still go with XP. It has a much more friendly feature and generally speaking most of us work on it at our work place so no new adjustments. Vista is different. I remember playing with it at local Circuit City and just to find the Run Command button(the one that shows up when you select Start) was hard to find, took a local CC geek to tell me. Also I do think all the latest development, including Vista, has lot less to do with any big advantage for end users like me and much more for those who are into Graphics, Computer Games etc. Bulk of what it offers is frankly useless for me.

What aspect or why is it easier to do Remote access with Vista? to use remote access in xp, you have to install some additional protocols that are not installed at the time of an os installation. futhermore, you meed to setup your router for router for port forwarding, and you need to install a considerably powerful firewall to protect your computer as it becomes quite vunerable to attacks over the internet when you are attempting to enable remote access. the process is a lot easier with vista, and i am told that the vunerablity over the internet is not as conspicous as that in xp. though you still do need to setup port forwarding with your router.
