vamos_rafa Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Sehwag's stats speak for themselves... 2 triple hundreds & one 290+, multiple 200+ all scored at run a ball, averaging 50+ at a SR of near 80. All this achieved while opening the innings :hatsoff: Even if Sehwag hangs up his boots today he would be a legend of the game who changed the way cricket was played, especially opening and showed that batsmen (and that too openers) can win the matches as well. He has changed the way the game is played but, there is a serious question mark on his legacy as a batsman outside the SC. I know he did score a few centuries in 10000 BC in Oz/Eng/SA, but other than that he has hardly done anything. If he can change that, then he would surely be a legend, atleast in my view.

That average includes places like Bangladesh' date=' Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The issue with Sehwag is his average in England and South Africa (his average is also poor in New Zealand).[/quote'] 3 failures in away tours have put a big question mark on his abilities.
panther Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 was he really better than lara when this thread was made?
Sehwag1830 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 was he really better than lara when this thread was made? Well if Inzamam can be better than Tendulkar, then comparison between Sehwag and Lara is certainly accurate.
MechEng Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 I find this thread as an insult for Lara. If you want to say like you should first say Sehwag is better than Sachin. Sachin can scores thousands of runs but he cant play big innings(only 2 double) like Sehwag and in test big innings normally wins the game unless it is third or fourth innings. As effectiveness in test Sehwag outperforms Sachin. In case of Sehwag and Lara both can score big and can dominate bowler. Sehwag can do it more often but Lara also didnt wast too much time. Sehwag also more fluent in subcontinet than outside of it. He has averaged 40 in outside subcontinent while Lara showed more versatility. Another fact which also goes against is that Lara was technically sounder, classier, arrogant which also Tendulkar can claim. So final judgement should be Sehwag< Sachin and Lara In test I will put Lara above Sachin as he really lacks ability to play big innings or play decisive innings in 4th innings. But overall I will put Sachin above Lara because Sachin simply got unmatched succes in ODI. Lara's 4th innings "greatness" is exaggerated IMHO. Apart from that 153 vs Aus and 80 odd vs SL (both at home), his 4th innings record is pretty ordinary tbh. Stats say it all - http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/52337.html?class=1;innings_number=4;template=results;type=batting;view=innings
MechEng Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Ya everyone can rant about Sehwag's inability to play pace. I agree he sucks against fast bowling, but he is the GREATEST player of spin. On a 5th day crumbling Kanpur pitch against an attack of Saqlain, Murali and Warne, I'll pick Sehwag to play a match winning innings at run a ball over any other batsman.

He sucks against fast bowling on swinging tracks. We have seen him thrashing good fast bowlers on tracks where there isn't much movement or pitch is slow.

To which, a colleague of mine, who works as a stats guys at Cricinfo, said a big no. I asked him the reason, he said in his opinion its Brian Charles Lara. We had an arguement for about an hour or so. He was telling me things like Sachin's average being around 35 when Mcgrath played. I argued that in the 2 series where both of them were fit and on top of their games, (i.e 1999 Aus tour and 2001 India), Sachin did very well against him. Then he said that Lara was more atacking and on his day he could rip an sttack which Sachin rarely does. I said, I take it as Lara's stupidity that he did not want to adjust according to the needs. I said if you watched the innings of 36 that Sachin played at Centurion last year, noone can doubt his prowess of being the best stroke maker ever. Then he said that unlike Lara, Sachin has never dominated a series. I said you can't fault Sachin for that. Yes, he does not have huge scores like Lara, but there have been many 3 test match series where he has scored 2 100's. Then came the killer one, that every player gets only 1 opportunity to finish of a game in 4th innings, where Sachin had faltered and Lara did it. I really wanted to tell him how Lara's 4th innings exploits are an eye-wash to prove that Sachin chokes and Lara is the best batsman 4th inning batter of all times. I knew that Sachin had a better 4th innings average than Lara, but was not 100% sure, and since I was arguing with a stats man, I did not want to look stupid. But, I think you made my day :--D
Marut Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Lara is an ATG, and in my opinion, second only to Bradman. Sehwag is a Hercules in Asia, but hardly an ATG outside Asia. So no comparison there.
Sehwag1830 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 No way Lara is ATG in IND, NZ, OZ . If Lara can be ATG then so can be Sehwag.
daryl1985 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Sehwag is the greatest of all time in the subcontinent but is vulnerable on pitches in South Africa, England, Australia and New Zealand where bowlers can swing the ball. If he changed his approach outside the subcontinent and showed more of a willingness to tough it out in alien conditions, he would do better.
Executioner Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 lara >> Sehwag But sehwag is still the best opener India has produced
Sehwag1830 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 lara >> Sehwag But sehwag is still the best opener India has produced Gavaskar says hi. :hysterical: And major lol at >> symbol. Lara won grand 1 test in his entire career in SC. Enough said.
daryl1985 Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 lara >> Sehwag But sehwag is still the best opener India has produced Better than Gavaskar. I'm not old enough to have seen Gavaskar play but by all accounts he is by far and away, India's greatest ever opener.

He will be a legend even if he retires now. Just the fact that he changed the way teams look at the opening role is testament to that fact. You won't see likes of McCullum or David Warner pushed to open in a million years if Sehwag hadn't showed what you could do at the top with an ultra-aggressive opener. As for Sehwag only successful in the sub-continent, it's not as if everyone succeeds even in sub-continent. For an opener to play the way he does and be as successful speaks volumes about Sehwag. If it was so easy to score run a ball triple hundreds in sub-continent I am sure plenty of batsmen would have done so, but I don't see any other batsman except for Sehwag who did so.
Marut Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 What about Viv then? Viv should be in the top 15 in test matches. In ODIs he should be second, after Tendulkar.
ravishingravi Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Forget about Sehwag, Sehwag1830 is better than Lara.
maniac Posted June 29, 2012 Posted June 29, 2012 Wow....can't beleive there are some serious posts in this thread....thought this was a joke thread. All due respect to Sehwag here but Lara is miles ahead
SLICKR392 Posted July 1, 2012 Posted July 1, 2012 That was a bit selfish no doubt. As a captain' date=' his job was to try to win, not make records.[/quote'] +1 Clarke could have broken Lara's record with ease against our attack without risking the match. Being the cpt. of the side..that was selfish.
