How did you come to that conclusion? He mentioned 2 anecdotes. How did we extrapolate from that?

Few things that get my goat with regard to ignorance among Indians - 1. Can't name and match North Eastern States with their capitals. 2. Can't list Army/Navy/AF ranks in order. 3. Not having even a basic knowledge of Indian polity. 4. Unable to make the distinction between LA and LS(something which you mentioned).

I can bet each and every one will fail on that four count here..

I remember a thread sometime back, can't recall which one, where many posters(including some well respected ones) argued why Geography, Civics, History were total Bullsheet and that we should do away from them. So I am not exactly surprised to find Indians who dont have a clue regarding this. xxx

Someone please tell me, how does knowing all that make me a 'better' or 'more knowledgable' Indian? The operative word here is Indian. It doesnt make me a prouder Indian if I know all the ranks of the army or states and capitals. What really matters is what I feel about the country, how proud I am about her diversity, her people, her culture, her past and her glorious future. I do not know the different capitals of the N.E, nor do i know the different ranks in the army, but I can bet my bottom dollar that I am as proud an Indian as any going around here and I will be able to carry my Indian identity as well any of you can manage. Even a foreigner can memorize the answers to the above question in a few minutes, but it will take him a bit more than a few minutes to fully understand the essence of being Indian. And Ultimately, thats what really matters, not some fun facts and figures.

North Eastern states and capitals :nervous: (those are the ones I forget during the exam :D - somehow many dont remember information abt the NE states, i dont know why, not much information on them in mainstream that we hear about in the South)

The question is not if you are any less Indian, or more. The question is to be aware of your country. I mean if you dont know the difference between a Gangtok and Agartala what are the odds you are ever going to visit that part of the country? If you dont know the difference between Nagaland and Arunachal how do you what exactly is meant by NE terrorism? And how exactly is a North Eastern supposed to feel when the bulk of his fellow "countrymen" doesnt even have a clue about what city/state he belongs to and where does it lie on the map?

Of course, knowing all this will make you more knowledgable about India. If you can't even name the states of your country with their capitals, you display shocking ignorance. If you can't make the distinction between Ashoka and CM, you display shocking ignorance. If you can't tell the difference between Brigadier and a Wing Commander, you display shocking ignorance.

Umm, if you don't even know about her present, chances are your knowledge about her past will be absymally poor.

It's not about being prouder. It's not about memorising. It's about being aware. Such knowledge comes from reading and following happenings in India consistently. You should know your Shillong from your Vizag. Your Purulia from your Pune. You can have all the 'essence' you crave, but if you can't make intelligent conversation about your country's geography, history, armed forces, polity, then in my book, you are an ignoramus.

Nope. They are quite involved from a Gult perspective. Most cities in USA have 3-4 Gult associations. I have wondered often why there can not be 1 Gult association?? And please dont say becaue of the number of people.
Reason is very simple - "caste". Yes, you are right about having different Telugu associations . There are actually only two big associations in US and rest of the small ones are confined to a city or state. Two big ones are Telugu Association of North America (TANA) and American Telugu Association (ATA). TANA is headed by group of people belonging to the particular caste known as "Kammas" while their rivals "Reddys" lead the ATA. Both these groups have long history of rivalry. Le'ts not even go there. Lots of internal politics and caste differences in telugu community in US makes other telugu guys to be embarrassed

The Constitution is just fine, our atitude towards our nation isn't. We live in an era where every single information is available on Google. If Indians spent an hour in an entire year they can pull up Indian political map, ranks and profile of Indian Armed forces etc etc. I bet an average Indian, specially those work/study/live abroad, have spent 100 times more effort, and time, to check the cell phone service provider charges or what is missing in Nokia 725 as compared to Motorola Razor. Yet when it comes to spending 5 minutes to pull out an Indian map out comes the excuses. I am going to shut up now because as is the wont many people would already be thinking I am in preaching mode. xxx

As a Bihari who comes from one of the most caste ridden state I can say that most of the times this caste system goes out the window when a Bihari comes out of the state. I mean you wont see 10 different Bihari unions in Mumbai, or anywhere else in India(or abroad). However even during my days at REC I was told by my AP colleagues how caste decides a lot for an Andhrite. Heck even in Jamshedpur they had different AP factions, go figure!

Sir - I was only quoting the resident erudite poster's opening salvo, and must admit to being peeved, not only by the appalling generalisation and the width of the brush, but also by the presumptuousness in the tone - which was undone soon after by his/her own self admitting he/she knew little of some questions about his/her country of origin.

I am sorry, Gambit but you are living in a bubble of ignorance if you feel all Indians have that kind of knowledge Brigadier, Wing Commander? NE Capitals. Maybe it's printed on the walls in Delhi, but I can bet you; if you go and do a mock interview on the streets of Indian Cities and ask them these questions, you will be shocked and close shop I wholeheartedly agree with MM and its a cheap shot to call some ignoramus It's good to have that kind of knowledge but the level of surprise you guys are showing is ridiculous
