Malcolm Merlyn
Who is the greatest batsmen in last 60 years?I deliberately made it after 1950 for one reason, while many things have changed but one thing that change big time was taht people started coming and playing in sub continent on turning tracks againsit quality spinners which not many batsmen before 1950 did. Most matches were between ENG and AUS,with a few againist other teams. IMO Sachin Tendulkar is the greatest and before any one says he didnt played great bowling as it was in 1970s i will point out the ones he played The two W's Allan Donald Shaun Pollock Mcgrath Lee Ambrose and Walsh Gough Akhtar Mcdermott Vaas Warne Murali Ntini Saqlain Merv Hughes and a lot other quality bowlers and scored 29000 international runs.....near about 10000 more than the nearest one. The others who are very close are Viv Richards,Sobers,Lara,Gavaskar..........this my top 5 Also the top 5 asian batsman for me will be Sachin,Dravid,Gavaskar,Sangakkara,Inzamam Discuss Link to comment

DomainK
Some may differ. Some will claim that a certain player is better than Tendulkar. That's nothing new, but there is a pattern to it. A Pakistani says that Inzamam or Yusuf is better than Tendulkar. A west Indian (and in this case a few more across the world) say that Lara is better, Sri Lankans claim that Jayasuriya is better, Australians say Ponting or Waugh is better etc. But they all compare their favorite/best players with Tendulkar only. Ever heard a Pakistani say that Inzamam is better than Lara? Or an Australian claim that Ponting is better than Inzamam or an English fan claim that Freddie has an aura like Jaysuriya? Never. The comparisons are always with Tendulkar. Because deep down they know that Tendulkar is the best. Tendulkar is the ultimate one- the very definition of the best. Every time a comparison like that starts, it only asserts the greatness of the greatest batsman ever- Sachin Tendulkar. kabira 1 Link to comment

vvvslaxman
If you are talking about overall ability it got to be Tendulkar. Footwork, all round stroke play, running between the wickets, Defense, balance, domination, temperament if you take all the parameter into consideration he had few equals in the last 50 years. Richards, Lara come close. In some areas they even exceed Sachin. When we talk about overall ability he stands out. Link to comment

Stick to your opinion and move on to another topic ffs Link to comment

Sooda
There be just one batsman who can be called the greatest and I think it is wrong to compare across the eras. So Sobers was the best of his era. Viv Richards, Gavaskar and Greg chappell were the best in their era. Sachin and Lara are the best in the present era. Who differs from this? And greatness of the batsman can't be measured just through statistics. Youre probably right, but it makes for fun discussion no hehe? I'd agree with 'the one'. Lara> SRT. Viv Richards is not far behind in a top 3 batters post 1950. You get the likes of Border whos faced some damn good attacks and scored runs. Tough call. Link to comment
