Going by rankings, even if we lose the SA series 2-0, we will still be #1. If we lose all 3 tests, then SA will be #1 with 0.1 points more than us. But do we really need to win the series to prove that we are #1? Why should we have to prove when SA should be the one to prove its #1 by winning the series 3-0. Anything less and then they have wait till the end of WC to dislodge us from the position we have earned. And damn right, we earned it. Since 2009, SA has won 1 series and lost 1 out 5 series. Meanwhile we have won 7 out of our last 9 series (5 out of 7 since 2009) with 0 losses. We are deserving #1 and even a loss in the SA series shouldn't bring doubts to anyone. We will remain #1 till someone else takes it from us by consistent good performances and SA cannot become the undisputed #1 just because they won 1 series.

Its not like we have played them a lot or that SA has won a lot in India. The Aussies took 35 years to win in India after the break up of the beatles.

You forgot to mention that out of those last 9 test series only one has been away from the sub continent and that was against new zealand. Can you imagine how much south africa would be in front of the world rankings if they had played their last 9 series in their conditions. Australia were regarded as the best for so long in tests but until they conquered india in 2001 I think it was I didn't think they deserved to be rated so highly but they did. When india win a series in australia and south africa then there is no denying how good they are.

saneindian Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 Don't have anything to prove to anyone, but with the kind of team we have currently, if we win, it will add to the aura and in a sense put many a doubters to rest. Plus a series win this time will provide huge impetus for our future teams traveling to SA (or elsewhere) and provide them with the exact blueprint of what it takes to win in SA. Another thing it will do is to make the team even more self confident which will help immensely going into the WC.

When india win a series in australia and south africa then there is no denying how good they are. Out of their last 9 home series played, SA have won 6, lost 2 and drawn 1. The series won include 2 series wins over WI and NZ, and 1 each vs India and Pak. Matches played, 26, won 14, lost 9. In our 9 last series (including home and away in NZ and twice in SL), played 24, won 14, lost 2!! In series terms, 7 won, 0 lost and 2 draw. Truly SA would have been far ahead of India :--D

Good thing is its starts in Centurion, that ground should favor us. I will be happy we can draw that series. We should have drawn the series last time if not won it..That Durban defeat (could have saved it just 1 more over was remaining) and that mindless 2nd innings batting in 3rd Test where freaking Harris looked like a great spinner. We just need to go out and play our brand of cricket.

Sports are played to win, not to prove a point to someone. #1 or not, home or away , especially if there is a competition between two best teams , everybody wants their team to win. Now with team India is #1 team, more so just to massage our ego. Just like Alexander wanted to conquer the world, we want to win everywhere.

This is the chance, Indian team really needs to prove they can win the series in SA conditions. Lets do it. The team should not miss this chance with the legend players.

rkt.india Posted November 25, 2010 Posted November 25, 2010 South Africa is no pushover at home and I do think that they will not take India lightly too and make green-tops...I think Centurian will be a batting paradise...like it was in Champions trophy and Champions league....They wont take a risk of playing Indian medium pacers on greenish wicket...though they have bowling to take benefit but it can backfire too....like it did in 2006 Johannesburg
