Claiming to be ‘newer’, ‘younger’ and ‘rejuvenated’, the all-rounder is eyeing a stint in the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League as a platform to regain his lost place in the side. The 26-year-old has just recovered from a back injury and started bowling in the nets. He says he is much more confident than before and can’t wait to deliver the new red cherry in the competitive games. He said his time at the National Cricket Academy, Bangalore has helped him become wiser and more mature. The talented left-arm seamer also claimed to have learnt a lot more about his body and his bowling. “I am feeling better than before when I had got injured. I think, I have got a new life,” he told DNA from Bangalore. “My back problem started during the IPL last year. The scanned reports here could not tell exactly what the problem was. NCA physio Paul Close advised me to go to Australia and there I got a clear picture. After that I have been working on my recovery. “At NCA, physiotherapist Ashish Kaushik and fitness trainer VP Sudarsan helped me a lot. I now have been bowling for sometime and can feel the changes. However, it is through practice matches that one will come to know how much I have improved,” Irfan added. Pathan promises to be a better bowler than he was since his downfall in 2006. “What you will see now will be different from what you saw three years back. Earlier, after injury I would rush back into things. I was eager, there was desire and I was in a hurry to come back. And that backfired. However, now I feel mature, wiser and better than before. Taking one step at a time,” said the Baroda-born seamer. “Not only on bowling front, I have improved physically also. There were problems when I used to release the ball before but now I am getting a better balance,” said Irfan. Irfan claimed that he has also got back the ability to bowl the lethal late-incoming delivery that troubled the right-handers. “Yeah, I can get the ball in now. I was struggling before but now I have corrected my technique.” He said he is disappointed to have missed out the World Cup 30-probable list. “I had not played competitive cricket after IPL and it was difficult to comeback unless you play some competitive games and perform. It is disappointing not to be there as the World Cup is happening in the sub-continent. But I don’t want to look back and just see ahead,” informs Pathan. The Kings XI Punjab player has set himself a plan to get back on track. “First I will play club matches in Baroda, then the Ranji one-dayers and then IPL, the most important platform to get back into the side.” Meanwhile, Pathan junior is happy with brother Yusuf’s inclusion in the World Cup probables. “It is great to see him there. yoda Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Bringing Irfan in depends up how well he is bowling compared to the 3 seamers we have. If he is bowling crap then it would be like playing with only 2 seamers in conditions that are suppose to help them. I was thinking of Irfan at the 7th batting slot since Raina and Pujara seem to suck ass, and not as the 3rd seamer slot. Then use him like Kallis as the 4th seamer. I believe he would have been effective on these SA tracks, not so sure he can be useful in India. He can even be groomed to replace Dravid at #3.

vvvslaxman Posted January 6, 2011 Author Posted January 6, 2011 the only concern for the england series is Ishant.I really thought he will bowl well in SA(with the extra bounce)but he was a stress reliever for the Saffers rather than a wicket taker for us.I would look for another swing bowler and seriously consider dropping Ishant if his form doesnt improve dramatically . I absolutely had no hope for him In SA. He can't swing. He has lost pace. RP and Nehra have bowled very well in SA conditions coz they could swing at decent pace. So India required a swing bowler not a hit the deck bowler. Yes he can do well provided he could bowl as fast as morkel. This guy is a hack. Averaging 48 under bowler friendly conditions. Atleast Sreesanth made up in the 2nd and 3rd test thanks to his swinging abilities.
VRV Singh Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 Well Sehwag is (and has been for a long time) the best option in this respect but he could not bowl. We can't exactly do much else. It was an option we also lost when dropping Yuvraj and subsequently Raina but the latter would've been cannon fodder anyway. It's not a big deal unless there's a credible alternative, even then the main issue was some utterly hopeless Ishant bowling

He is going to play next season.Hmm..ok. Let Irfan Pathan first start then by providing some balance to the Baroda team for at least a season without breaking down and then we can talk. Till then we can all pretend that he does not exist as far as Indian cricket is concerned.

He can even be groomed to replace Dravid at #3.[/quote'] Oh Ok, I thought you were recommending Irfan for not only #7 but also as one oif the 3 seamers with Ind playing 2 spinners, considering how Bhajji performed. Even if he find someone with a slighly better bowling ability than Ganguly's with 80% of his batting ability then that would be helpful!

Plus Irfan Pathan at this point is moot since he been inactive for a while now and one has to see how he does when he starts to play FC cricket again and cuts it for International cricket.

Not sure why you find it out of question. Whenever I see Irfan bat he seemed more confident with better technique than the likes of Raina or even Pujara.

f.b.m Posted January 6, 2011 Posted January 6, 2011 I would say that our problem was that our 3rd seamer was piss poor and was used like a part timer until Zaheer got injured. Ohja would have been a better option than him (like I said before the 2nd test). Also Sehwag being injured doesnt help when it comes to the bowling workloads.

Mithun can be given some chances in Eng or WI I know he is not great, but there are not too many good quality fast bowlers in India :((

Correct. He has a 31 test average with 1 hundred and 6 50s after about 30 tests, not a laughable performance by any means. Anyways, talk of Irfan is just theoretical as he isn't even in the selector's radar for any format.
arsenal Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 india do have a spinner capable of winning them matches.....harbhajan! look at his 4-10 durban, turned the game on his head, and he got four top order wickets in cape town, no of the other bowlers could bowl him out. 7-120 is great bowling.
urbestfriend Posted January 7, 2011 Posted January 7, 2011 I always feel we should have a bowling all-rounder like Piyush Chawla at no 7. We dont really need an extra bastman as Dhoni is good enough to play at no 6 and Piyush is good enough bat to play at #7.
