Some perspective on Dhoni's captaincy

Dhoni's greatest strength is his calmness. He never seems frustrated, never seems too over the top. This seems a little out of character from the usual Indian captain, who either seem to be too nervous (Ganguly, Azza) , or seem to be a little too intense (Tendulkar, Dravid) Having said that, he needs to seriously work on his captaincy when he is bowling to tailenders. Too often we'll see a single immediately being given to the "set" batsmen, and all out attack on the tailender. This might work with an extreme bunny like Martin, but even for players that can barelly hold a bat this isn't a good option. The set batsmen isn't going to get out, and is free to milk singles and/or smash boundaries on the 5th/6th balls of the over. The tailender can either hang in there or take the attack to the opposition. Why not try to attack at both ends ? Also his use of Harbhajan isn't the greatest. Sure he hasn't bowled too well over the past couple of years, but he hasn't been used in an attacking way either. Long on with SA 62/4 and having 4 wickets down? Third man boundary rider if Kallis reverse sweeps a couple of times? Dhoni has a hand in this as well, just as much as Bhajji does for not telling his skipper exactly what he wants. Dhoni is inspiste of all this, to repeat Professorji's post, a fantastic skipper. I couldn't be more happier with this team over the past 2 years, and Dhoni has a major hand to play in it. But he has room to improve, and we wish he does.
BUMP! Great captaincy today, kept attacking. WTG Dhoni

Dhoni has a lot of attributes going for him as a captain. The most positive that he possesses that our previous skippers didn't is the ability to remain calm under pressure. Pressure brings out the best in him. Lesser captains would have trembled and made tactical errors. Not Dhoni. And this results in the rest of the side being composed and going about their task objectively. I don't think any other captain would have led us to victory yesterday, apart from MSD. The other thing that Dhoni brings to the table is his disdain of nepotism. Or at least relative to our previous skippers. For once, a place in the squad is merit based as it should be, and the increased competition has only done us good. If Dada were the captain, I don't think an established player like Yuvraj would ever be dropped. What I think we give Dhoni undue credit for is when we claim he has only 1 good bowler to use. That has been the perennial issue with our teams. If anything, we're a better bowling unit now. Dhoni also has the advantage of leading a much more balanced and stronger side than most of his predecessors. Thats something we have to factor out before hall of faming him :P

I beg to differ. Under Dhoni we've had players like Jadeja and RP Singh being given long runs in the side when they should've been dropped.

^^^ Fair enough. R Jadeja should have been axed. RP Singh, was in as a part of the rotation policy we use in our bowling department. I didn't say Dhoni didn't indulge in favoritism. He did, but not of the same magnitude as the captains before him.

That certianty wrong to say. Remember these players you mentioned have a good domestic record and so deserves the chances. A lot goes behind the scenes like training, and clearly these players are good but have shown it in patches only just like tons of other players.

Dhoni is going to be found out quite bad in a year's time unless he gives up his defensive tactics and poor team skills.. he's backing all the wrong players ! Comparing this Dhoni to the one that captained during the VBSeries, one is simply prompted to ask - who is this impostor ?

Mediocre bowling attack????? The myth of how bad or bowling is just gets bigger and bigger. You have to take 20 wickets to win a test match. You have to have good bowlers to do this. We are number 1 test side in the world, we are winning matches over and over again, thus we have good bowlers. We have the pacer in the world after Steyn in ZK who is brilliant and probably is Indias greatest ever seamer(other inidan captains would have chopped of right hand for such a player). We have the best spinner in the world with over 350 test wickets. We have 2 back up pacers who are decent, bit hot and cold but provide decent back up and in one of them sree who on his day can be very good. This is far from mediocre attack. In fact 50% of it is world 11 stuff. Stop the mediocre bowling lazy sterotyping. Dhoni has done decent job but has bloody good players at his diposal including the bowling.

the only criticism i ever had for dhoni in his itme as captain was his handling of sresanth in this south africa test series. thats because i always thought of him as a players' captain, who stood by all his players and backed them no matter what. other than that, u cant really complain because he has a fantastic record. the best w/l ratio of any modern day captain and one of the best in the history of test cricket. a superb away record. india has won almost every single ODI series it has played under dhoni. never lost a test series under him. at the end of the day, that is all that maters. yeah, his captaincy isnt the greatest at times but no captain is always doing things the right way ALL the time. his captaincy yesterday was fantastic, in fact u could make a case for him winning man fo the match. smart field placings, plenty of vocal support, smart bowler rotation, and as always, ice cool in difficult situations.

Like Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan, Gambhir, Raina and our often malinged pacers? In fact he was accused of showing faith in Yusuf and Irfan as well early on in his ODI captaincy career and off late even DK. But obviously its easy to twist the argument as you please.

what exactly is wrong being defensive ? & as for backing , he does it for every player whos made it to the team ...if some of you leave the blind hatred for a min and notice , there is a clear pattern ...be it Jadeja or Kohli , hes made sure no one could complain, lack of opportunities as the reason for failure ...the ones who have performed have stayed & the others where kicked out for good ... same with the likes of Vijay , YP,Rohit and Ishant .
