Woman drops pant after rat runs up her trouser LONDON: A woman was forced to drop her trousers in the middle of a packed rush hour subway train in the US when a rat ran up her trouser leg, it was reported here Monday. Ana Vargas, 40, was sitting in the train as it approached New York's Columbus Circle station when the rodent suddenly crawled up her leg. Varagas, a hotel supervisor, said she initially thought it was her trousers moving until she realised it was something crawling inside. Despite violently shaking her trousers, the large rodent still didn't drop out. "I said, 'Oh, my God - it's an animal on my leg'". "I was shaking, but nothing was coming out ... I had to pull my pants down in front of everyone on the train," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying. She immediately spat out the sea creature — along with its internal organs — but could still feel “small, squirming organisms” in her mouth. Doctors in South Korea examined the woman and found 12 squid spermatophores attached to her tongue, cheek and gums. A “spermatophore” is a sac of semen that implants itself in the female squid before a mechanism shoots out sperm and fertilises her eggs. The case was revealed in a paper by the National Centre for Biotechnology Information in Maryland, US. The paper says: “Twelve small, white organisms stuck in the tongue, cheek and gums were removed. The foreign bodies were identified as squid spermatophores.” A similar case was reported last year after a woman ate raw seafood in Japan, but British diners are unlikely to be hit because chefs in the West remove internal organs when preparing squid.

As one listens to the tale of these two senior citizens, there’s just one thought that flits through every mind: It can happen to us also. The story of how this husband-wife duo, M.J. Joseph and Elizabeth Joseph, rescued themselves from the toilet in which they were trapped for three days and two nights, makes interesting reading. It all began when Joseph, who was suffering from a bad combination of diarrhoea and fever went to the toilet on Saturday last. On hearing a thud and a bang from inside, his wife rushed in, to see her husband lying unconscious on the floor. In her anxiety, she inadvertently closed the door of the toilet after her. It got jammed. Compounding the confusion was the fact that the door did not have a latch. It was taken off quite some time ago. Now the door was locked from outside and they were inside, with no way to get out. “The place was so small. Though I repeatedly tried to open it, the door remained stuck”, said Eliamma. She cried, wailed and shouted, in the hope that the neighbors would hear them. No one heard her. No one came. Eliamma made a temporary bed for her husband by pulling down a piece of plywood from the ceiling. While Joseph slept, his wife sat atop the commode. Eliamma could only watch helplessly as her husband’s health started sliding down. She did her best to keep him alive. When hunger gnawed at them, they drank from the tap. “We waited, thinking that someone would ask for us. No one came,” said Joseph. By noon, they saw a ray of hope in the form of a toilet brush. It’s handle was made of iron. Eliamma thrust it against the keyhole with all her might. She went on hitting at the keyhole till a small hole was made. They could thus open the door. They drank some water and went to sleep. Joseph and Elizabeth, now retired, were teachers at M.T. Seminary Higher Secondary School.

However, the first woman President of the country rejected mercy petitions of five people who had committed heinous crime, including the assassins of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. A Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson said the President commuted the death sentence of 35 people involved in 19 cases. Among those whose mercy petitions were accepted are those convicted of mass murder, kidnapping, rape and killing of children. On June 2, Patil gave her pardon to four more Bandu Baburao Tidke from Karnataka, Buntu from Uttar Pradesh and Lalchand alias Laliya Dhoom and Shiv Lal from Rajasthan. As a swami of Sadashiva Appana Math, Bagalkot, Tidke abducted a 16-year-old schoolgirl, raped and murdered her. UP's Bantu, on death row since July 2008, was convicted of raping and killing a five-year-old girl. On February 9, she accepted the clemency petition of Sushil Murmu, pending since 2004, who was convicted for giving 'bali' (sacrifice) of a nine-year-old-boy in Jharkhand for his own prosperity. Since 1981, 91 convicts sought commutation of their death sentences to life imprisonment. Of these, 31 petitions were accepted, out of which 23 were during Patil's five-year tenure :WTF:
