While some other scholars say that its completely okay to celebrate his birthday. Saudi Arabia is the only nation that bans celebration on this day. Every other nation celebrates the Mawlid.

Boring friends you have. :P Jokes apart, I think that yours is a case of some Shia and Sunni individuals choosing not to celebrate the Mawlid. It is widely celebrated. Shias observe the festival a few days after the Sunni Mawlid.
