gaurav92 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Sunil Gavaskar in the studios just pointed at a theory which I had been highlighting for quite some time. The 8 batsman theory. Coming to Raina, he is a genuine match winner, he has the unique ability to get the boundaries, and since the World Cup is in India, there wont be much bounce in the track to trouble him, and even if there is some bounce, the slowness of the pitch will allow Raina to transfer his wait until the balls gets up and he can pull the ball comfortably, provided he read the line well. So his presence at no.6 or 7 along with Yusuf is a big plus in the batting powerplay and also in case where we need 7-8 an over.So I see no reason why Raina should be dropped, after making a good thunderous half century. Now you would be asking me who to drop ? Either Yusuf or Kohli ? My answer is neither of them . We can go for either 2 seamers + 1 spinner combination or 3 fast bowlers. But I would prefer 2+1 combination with Bhajji or Chawla as our genuine spinner and the trio of Yuvi, Yusuf and Raina sharing 20-25 overs in between them. This looks a far more balanced side with lot of options both with the bat as well as with the ball. My Playing XI Sachin Sehwag Gambhir Yuvraj Kohli Dhoni Raina Yusuf Harbhajan/Chawla/Ashwin Zaheer Nehra/Munaf/Sreesanth. http://www.indiancricketfans.com/showpost.php?p=1320720&postcount=229
pinkfreud Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Sunny (and you) have got it horribly wrong in my view. At a time where people are goading Dhoni to play more spinners, Gavaskar is doing just the opposite. Our pitches are more spinner friendly than seamer friendly, but that doesn't mean we should relegate all spinning duties to the part timers. To top it all, Bhajji has been a tad lacklustre, Chawla is even worse, and Ashwin hasn't even got a chance yet, and won't if the 8+3 combo is followed because we all know how much Dhoni favours having one leggie in our team. Matches aren't merely won by batting.. bowling matters a huge deal too. Did Gavaskar not see how England was plowing even our specialist spinners, leave alone our part timers in spite of such a huge score on a flat pitch? Teams should be well balanced, not one sided. We all saw how we had to pay for having just a batting oriented team in our close match with England. Also, having a 8+3 combo will make India even more predictable because we will have far fewer options which the opposing teams will easily pick up on.
NareshK Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Our bowling is weak and you want to drop another bowler ? Why dont we do away with bowlers completely and just play with 11 batsmen ?
Temujin Khaghan Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 the side looks very abnormal. we dont need 8 batsmen. 5-6 are more than enuf for a side with batsmen with exaggerated batting statistics. this is our best shot. dhoni is doing it right. sachin sewag gambhir kohli yuvraj dhoni yusuf harbhajan zaheer (ashwin/sree/ nehra) munaf
pinkfreud Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Also, Raina's ODI bowling ER isn't great.. it's over 5, while Ashwin has a better ER in ODIs in the few matches he's played.
rkt.india Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 No theory is wrong until our third and fourth bowler start doing well..We dont know who is part timer yuvarj or harbhajan or pathan or chawla...
Aniruddha Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 any combination looks good if the captain of the team is comfortable with that and our captains (dada, dravid, dhoni) get used to the combo of 7+4.
Sachin=GOD Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 4 bowlers are consistanly going for lots and lots of runs and are unable to pick wickets and now we've got people saying drop another bowler :adore: what next - all 11 batsmen :hmmm:
zen Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Gavaskar is confusing the team here. Many folks try to pick team based on percentage cricket, which may work in bi-lateral series or round-robin group stages as you can expect the batting to fire more often than not to give you a win say 3 wins out of 5 in an ODI series or a QF qualification based on finishing in the top 4 in the world cup. But KO are a different ball game. Percentage cricket doesn't work that much in KO stage as you don't get a 2nd chance like in a bi-lateral ODI series or group stages (or like in tests through 2nd innings). You lose a game and that's the end of the story. You pack your bags. To be successful in KO stages, you have to account of batting failures too because you are likely to play better oppositions, who would be fired up too. You got to have options to attack both w/ the bat and the ball. Which is why teams w/ the ability to attack both w/ the bat and the ball usually do well in KO.
rkt.india Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 @rett though 8+3 idea is a percentage idea but what about the team which does not even have any good bowling options..in which part timers bowl better than real bowlers in which doesnt matter whether you play with 4/5 bowlers they will go for same runs?
zen Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 @rett though 8+3 idea is a percentage idea but what about the team which does not even have any good bowling options..in which part timers bowl better than real bowlers in which doesnt matter whether you play with 4/5 bowlers they will go for same runs? I see your point but ODIs are not always abt ER. A decent specialist bowler will usually bowl more wkt taking balls than a part-timer. Picking up crucial wkts is what makes the difference in the end. Considering how on a flat pitch even the regulars struggle to bowl the full quota, Ind needs more bowling options rather than less. We have to be flexible in our thought process and not go in w/ preconcived thoughts like abc and xyz will bowl their full quotas, part-timers will do this, mno will do that. Usually we know, who is bowling well based on form but still it is difficult to see what the performance on the day would be. IMO, the better way to look at KO games from a bowling perspective is to have 6 bowlers, including part-timers, who can bowl 50 overs amongst themselves. Go w/ 3 seamers +1 spinner +2 part-time spinners or 3 seamers+2 spinners+1 part timers to give yourself options and spread the overs around. You need the 3 seamers to bowl during PP, at death and even see if their is reverse, you need spinners to bowl and pick wkts in the middle overs Ofc, if the pitch is a turner or a seamining wkt then it makes the selection of bowlers and team composition easier :winky:
don_corleone840 Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 sunil gavaskar is losing his brain. What a stupid theory.:finger: we should go with five bowlers if we want to win world cup.
rkt.india Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 @but these bowlers are not even picking wickets and...I know picking wicket is the best way to stop run scoring but for that a team needs bowlers who can pick up wickets
zen Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 @but these bowlers are not even picking wickets and...I know picking wicket is the best way to stop run scoring but for that a team needs bowlers who can pick up wickets Which is why we have to mix and match. Out of 6, one or two may have a good day w/ the ball, 2 could have a good ER while the ones having a bad day can fill in rather than we have limited options on field w/ the captain not knowing what to do, the fielders being discouraged with ball being hit all around the park and the crowd hoping that somehow the 50 overs come to end quickly It the same way you have 6-7 batsmen, not everyone will do well on the day but since we have the options, we know that those who do well can atleast help Ind out. Tomm, if the batsmen don't deliver thenwill you suggest going in with 4 batsmen and 7 bowlers? Because batsmen are scoring 20-30 anyways so we drop 2-3 batsmen and replace them with bowlers who could hit 20-30 runs too and bowl well. Unfortunately cricket doesn't work that way. The best way to get your self out of a bad situation is to hve a right balance w/ sufficient options for both batting and bowling. If nothing is clicking then you are not a good team, simple :icflove:
yoda Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 We don't know if it should be 7+4 or 6+5 so sunny says let's try 8+3. :hehe:
Ram Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 Why go with only 8+3? How about 9+2? Even 11+0? Heck, why not clone 10 Sachins make it all Sachin eleven? If and indeed Sunny did say that we should play only 3 specialist bowlers, I think its probably a good idea if he just sticks to tracking the statistical milestones of batsmen. The man, as usual, is completely clueless.
vvvslaxman Posted March 7, 2011 Posted March 7, 2011 For fun... it is fine. But 8+3 combinations usually you find in associate teams.
