Along with being a great player, he was also an unbelievably good captain who won test series in every country he played in(eng as a player though not as captain)

IF he had said best ODI batsman ever for Australia. I would have had no problem The contributions of Warne and Mcgrath outweighs his contribution. We can see how they struggling without Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist..They have good replacements in batting. But bowling is what they will never replace Warne and Mcgrath. Those two were Mean Machines.

I have not seen Chappel and Border, but I have seen Steve Waugh and to me he was certainly better than Ponting, may not be as naturally talented as Ponting, but his determination and grit made him better than what his overall talent was

There is a case may be for Greg Chappell being better batsman than Ponting.He was a great batsman.He could play on any type of game and he played spin very well.Ponting had his share of problem against spinners in India which holds him back a little. But Steve Waugh and Allan Border never had the talent or ability of Ponting .They were very gritty players who became legendary because of the toughness they had shown.

Talent wise Ponting eclipses both, in my opinion. Their achievements however might hold more value since they scored their runs in better eras. What do you think?

Border and Chappell have definitely contributed more as batsmen to Austrlian cricket than Ponting ever did. Ponting as a batsman has been a five year phenomena - 2002-2006. In this time period he was scoring heavily. Take these five years out and Ponting's numbers are mediocre. And these five years were at the time, when Australian team could easily have done without Ponting's heavy scoring as they had so many stars in team. Border raised his level of game when Australia was going thru re-building phase (between 83-89 he scored at an average of 60) while Ponting dropped his game when team was going thru re-building phase ( between 2007 and today, Ponting averages 41). Chappell's contibution has also been great but his relative lack of success outside Australia puts some question marks. Still I would rate him higher than Ponting.
