:hail::hail: IPL for giving second chances to talented players who never achieved their true potential for some reason. An eye injury in Valthaty's case. Even if he never makes it to the Indian team, at least he could make a career in IPL and become rich just by playing in the league. Let's face it, not everyone is going to end up playing for India and for those guys, IPL is a good opportunity to get fame and money. :two_thumbs_up:

Absolutely. Putting most of your wonder years into practicing and playing the sport and then to depend on a gambler's luck of being picked to play in the national side is a very sad deal. Better that their talent be displayed and compensated financially in this manner while they wait for their Team India selection to come through if and when it does.

Surprising that nobody posted the detailed Yahoo article on Paul though it was published yesterday night itself. Nayar recommended Paul to KXIP and he is a T20 specialist in domestic MI circuit.

If you could find a football equivalent for his story, Paul Valthaty would be a striker struggling to find his feet in the big league, having done it all in lower leagues, and then suddenly one fine day scoring a hat-trick for a Premier League side against one of the top guns. Valthaty’s hundred against Chennai Super Kings would be somewhat of a fairytale, considering his only worthwhile performance in top-level cricket was a streaky 44 in a warm-up one-day game for a Mumbai Cricket Association XI (made up of reserves) against the touring England team at the Brabourne Stadium. Today was the stage he had waited for, having failed to break into Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy team and having played a solitary one-dayer for them in February 2006. In Mumbai circles, Valthaty is a T20 legend, known from his early days for his ability to thump the ball as hard as anyone else, so much so that he’s made the format his own, both in the club and domestic circles for Mumbai. Abhishek Nayar, his close friend and team-mate from Mumbai and Kings XI Punjab told Yahoo! Cricket, “Paul is pretty much a T20 specialist in Mumbai, and his track record in the past two-three years in almost every tournament in that format tells you that he’s done extremely well. Even in the Mumbai Cricket Association T20 Championship in 2009/10 (where Valthaty represented Payyade Sports Club), he was adjudged the player of the tournament.” Nayar added, “It was really heartening to see him do well, given the fact that he’s seen almost all his peers make it big for Mumbai in all formats.” And even as Valthaty was the quintessential journeyman in the IPL circuit if you like, having previously represented the Mumbai and Rajasthan franchises respectively, it was on Nayar’s recommendation that the Kings XI Punjab decided to rope in Valthaty. “After I got picked by Kings XI Punjab, I had a talk with the franchise about giving Paul an opportunity to play for them, and since the past two months, he’s been training really hard and the result is here to see. I am very happy for what he achieved today,” Nayar said. To Valthaty’s credit, he was always earmarked by his coaches and peers for success as a stroke-player of some ability. An early graduate of the Elf Vengsarkar Academy, Valthaty was spotted through his big-scoring exploits for Don Bosco School in both the Giles and Harris Shield, and subsequently, he went on to represent Podar College in Central Mumbai, where he was a B.Com student. Cricket, then took over and impressive show in the Vijay Merchant Trophy (national U-16s) for two consecutive seasons, with a follow up in the Cooch Behar Trophy (national U-19s) for Mumbai, earned him with an junior India cap, whom he represented in the Under-19 World Cup of 2002 in New Zealand, with the added distinction of being the only Mumbai cricketer to make that squad. Sadly, fate had something else in store for the young lad. Opening the batting for India in a game against Bangladesh U-19s, Valthaty was batting on 5, when he was hit on the face (right eye to be precise) by a bouncer from pacer Shafaq Al Zabir and subsequently taken to the hospital and that’s when his progress was halted, and delayed. Unfortunately, as some argue, Valthaty might have been a Mumbai cricketer born at a wrong time, given that he’s unlikely to break into the first Ranji XI anytime soon — given the strength and class of that batting order, and a faint recognition that First Class cricket might never quite be his cup of tea. But what today’s performance at Mohali has underlined is the very the essence of anonymous talent Indian cricketers, a somewhat romantic notion that all it needs is a platform, a stage to display what we might have never seen or heard before. Go ask that boy, Paul Valthaty.

But there are so many potential players who come out of the IPL but perform miserably on the international level' date=' that its hard to consider such players a long term potential for the Indian side[/quote'] (i can pick issue with what you said but that's for another day) you are picking the wrong issue at the wrong time.we are nt talkin about a guy who had a normal career at FC level.that's the problem with your comment. the point is this guy has not even got minimum chances at FC level.last time he was on track he was in the India u19. kohli or unmukt chand got their chances in FC at 17. what i am saying there are some people who miss out on vital opportunities due to some reason.just because you have not heard of him before or they didn't receive the due attention earlier, its not prudent to dismiss them. the least that guys like this deserve is a chance at FC level to succeed or fail. and there are hopeless cases like jaydev shah and arjun yadav who don't have any chance of going higher except in their wildest fantasies and are waste of space in ranjis.

Lets see, now that he is in the spotlight, he will definitely get a chance to perform atleast in FC and domestic. If he consistently performs, he might get an India cap too. But everything will have to come on the back off consistent performances and also the ability to perform at the bigger stage

As on today Paul is the orange cap holder and is beating the best.. with this kinda performance specially if he becomes the top run getter or second highest run getter from IPL, he should be picked ahead of guys like rohit sharma , yusuf pathan and others and he shud be a permanent member in 1 days and t20"s. he looks a dangerous TALENT..why i call him dangerous is bcos , he may throw out some regulars from their positions as well..who knows he plays ahead of a raina and yusuf in future, he is way ahead of rohit, chennai super kings opener , abhishek nayar, and other fringe players already.

he si the future superstar for INDIA.
I dont go that far. He seems to me a slogger, at the best he might play for t-20 side but dont think he'll play ODI or test. He just goes for his shots, good hand eye coordination, don't have a good defense, does well in the batting conducive pitches. I really doubt his ability to bat in slow pitches or pitches that offer swing.

I feel sorry for valathaty.he looks a better t20 player than guys like tiwary but will never get a chance to earn big bucks because he may never play for india.BCCI and their stupid capped players rule in really one of the worst rule in sports,it might actually be illegal and they should challenge it in court.
