Former New Zealand Test cricketer Adam Parore has climbed Mount Everest. The 40-year-old Parore, who played 78 tests and 179 one-day internationals as a wicketkeeper-batsman, reached the summit of the world's tallest mountain on Saturday. Parore was accompanied to the summit by three guides, 10 Sherpas and seven other climbers on a commercial climb. He hoped to raise $74,424.14 for a children's charity. Parore told New Zealand media he ran out of oxygen and spent only 20 to 30 minutes on the summit. "I took a few photos but I wanted to come back. It is very exposed and a long way down," he said.

^ Many attempts fail due to various reasons like bad weather, loss of supplies etc. They just arent advertised as much as successes. IIRC Even Parore succeeded in his second attempt, not first. Sherpas climb till quite high (not sure if all the way), and its easier for them because they know the entire terrain very well and can breath easily in the thin air. They do most of the heavy lifting. But that doesnt make it any easier for the climbers

Definitely not on way to Mt.Everest. But, go to any pilgrimage in Uttarakhand ( Hemkund, badrinath, kedarnath) - you will see some 55-60 kg Sherpa carrying 100+kg guy in a basket on their backs, as if it is some cotton bag. -that too on a uphill track where a normal healthy person cannot go more than 3-4 kms/hr w/o carrying any baggage - and heart constantly pounding at 180+ BPM all through you are not standing. It is a sight ( and experience) one must feel at least once in their lifetime - esp when you are young and yourself are panting walking alongside them. Ohh and also amazing stamina and strength of khacchars ( mules).

Till now there has been 212 deaths reported on MT Everest. Most of the Deaths have occurred at the time of descend or due to avalanche or bad weather (see Khumbu Icefall).Due to low temperature bodies of many are still intact (Not for weak hearted ) see here picture of death bodies found on the way to Everest. http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=128148751 A Documentary was even made by National Geographic on the same subject (you can find it on YouTube ).
