ravishingravi Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 Too much ToI hate on this thread. Today's TOI is remarkably good. They have 2-3 pages covering the Neeraj Grover case. Very detailed write up, and balanced covering. I-diva : a gossip/celeb news tabloid to be released every Friday was also launched today. Pretty neat stuff. Definitely readable. Times Good Eating has some good recipes and restaurant recommendations for the monsoons. I actually like the ToI. Mariyam it is toilet paper. There are occasional sparks of what you can call "journalism" but it really has degraded so quickly into nothing more than a tabloid.

The sole purpose of reservations is for the uplifment of certain sections of the society,so what is the point of just giving them education and jobs but not helping them adapt with the rest of the society.

TOI is much better than all other English newspapers except The Hindu. I don't know why but it seems to be the case with many papers that the online edition is not as good as the print edition.

Not taking sides, but many pay more fees and have to fight with more people for lesser seats. And most of the reserved students who get in waste their seats, which could have gone to deserving students. Also, their conduct is not becoming for students of a prestigious institution like IIT. But yeah, not everyone is the same.

Looks like they have the same version the world over. I thought, they would try and 'upscale' the website for the NRI readers. They consider you just as bad/naive/gullible as they consider us. I suddenly respect the ToI even more now. :P Give me a better alternative? Also, then comes the very relevant question. Why do you buy a newspaper? For coverage of local news, traffic, shopping/sales in the city, show timings, whats going on in the city, film reviews, book reviews, masala stuff ToI is unmatched. Their coverage of Adarsh society case ( I learned more about the case from ToI than our internal newsletter at work) was phenomenal. They deserve appreciation for that. Their coverage of most of the scams too is in good detail. I don't follow the financial news much, so I don't know how good they are. For international news, they take stuff from Reuters or AFP. I don't follow much sport anyways, so I don't care about that either. Times Crest has some interesting articles on the state of the nation and good op-eds. All in all, for my needs, ToI is the best.

For Financial News their sister publication Economic Times is the best newspaper in the country. Apart from that, the Financial news in TOI itself is not bad. One grouse I have against English newspapers is that they usually don't cover much of the local news of the city/state. I read TOI & HT and both usually do not have enough of the local news and tend to concentrate more on National/International news.

I think financial news is pretty much at par with world standards imo. I would take Hindu any day over TOI. For such a huge conglomerate, TOI indulges in far too much of yellow journalism. Times Crest is good, yes. As I said, once in a blue moon they do their job, rest of it is a sell out. On a +ve note, you can actually make a profit on the "raddi" with Mumbai mirror, TOI and Bombay times combines. Another +ve, mirror and BT might allow our young kids to hit puberty early :secret:

That will be fair.[/quote'] Such quotas are present in all countries all over the world. In the US even private companies get special treatment based on their minority and under-previlaged status. And no, the backwardness is not percieved, its the result of years of opression For us to progress as a nation, we have to bring our most backward people on par with the rest. If that means causing a bit of inconvinience to majority or even loss of talent, so be it, its a price which much be paid I have seen many times people complaining that they are treated differently because they were upper class or hindus or men. But again, I feel it is the need of times. A bit like a gentleman will put the safety of women and children before his own. They(lower caste, minority relgions, etc) are all my countrymen and if I need to make some sacrifice for them, I must be willing to
