Ram Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Abhinav definitely has a bright future ahead of him. Being a left-hander, he has a HUGE advantage over some of his right handed counterpart openers. The single most threatening ball that a right arm bowler can bowl, the outswinger, is now an incoming ball to him. Of course, a well bowled inswinger can still be a huge threat, but given a choice most batsmen would chose to face a top class inswinger, than a superbly bowled outswinger, because your pad is always there as a 2nd line of defense and plus its (relatively) easy to spot an inswinger early. And thats one of the biggest reason why, Chris Tremlett, arguably the best bowler in the world even, in the last 6 months, could not have much of an impact against him. Watching him bat initially, one of the concerns was - Where was going to get his runs from? His technique is obviously compact and solid enough to help him survive, but if the runs dont start flowing, the scoreboard pressure could get to a young player like that. But he responded with some crisp flicks of his hip and some solid straight drives. He clearly needs to improve his ability to score behind point on the off-side, one of THE most productive scoring areas in test cricket. I think we're potentially looking at somebody who could serve India for 10-12 years here. If he can look this assured and calm this early, it promises great things for the future! Too bad he fell right into the trap for his dismissal. The ball that got him out on 49 - wide loopy half-volley - was obviously a well thought plan by the English who knew he'd be sucked into playing a loose ball, anxious to get his 50. And for me, his dismissal was the turning point of the day. Right up until that point, we looked relatively under control. But after that (barring the first 30 mins after lunch), it was all downhill.

Karan114 Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 As tough as playing your first two series away from Asia is, the good thing is that he has learned his weak areas much quicker than he would have playing at home. He clearly has some ability and is not out of place at the highest level at all (in terms of temperament/mentality), now the next step is to go back and work on those weaknesses after this series. Sehwag will be 33 in a couple of months, has injury problems and isn't keen on opening in his final years in Test cricket, so there is a big chance for Abhinav to become a regular member of the Test side.

OT: The first such player - I saw him play his first test and he became part of the team pretty soon - was a 16 year old from Mumbai, 22 years back. What a journey it has been.

Vijay is a FTB at least for now. It's good that he has been exposed and better players are getting chance otherwise Vijay would have continue to live on his hundred on flat track and IPL success.

I don't want him to go the Vijay way to start beleiving in his slogging capabilities but I wonder about his quick scoring capabilities... Obviously Sehwag is a once in a lifetime player but we all know thatthe entire batting line up is cabable to up the run rate when it matters SRT,Laxman,Dravid,Gambhir,Dhoni,Raina can score quickly and change the game according to situation as they have shown in the past but would like to see Mukund show those glimpses too.This test match is different but hopefully Mukund will show us this side of his game too..

Ramesh was gifted with technique , thats about it ... Mukund on the other hand has most bases covered . Much batter technique , better footwork & far better on the backfoot.

I was told about Sachin by someone else who is good friends/business contact of Sachin. Sachin is the brand ambassador for his company. Met Mukund just walking about, spotted him, called him over and just got talking. I guess who has happy to be recognized lol
