I think injuries related to workload is definitely one of the concerns. But that is not unique to IPL, IPL just adds to it. The more important concerns are: 1) Possible demise of budding test prospects even before they develop. (eg: Murali Vijay) 2) Killing all the hunger to fight back into the national team (eg: Rohit) 3) Bowlers slowing down to ensure their body lasts to play in the lucrative Tontee Tontee tournaments. (eg: almost all Indian bowlers) 4) Players retiring early to preserve themselves for these Tontee Tontees (eg: Malinga, Shaun Tait) Unless IPL caps player salaries to 100k or so, it will kill all forms of cricket completely.

This is the key. Guys like Rohit, Uthappa will not care about playing Test match for India. They are already millionaires.

It's not that I disagree with you, but not going to happen. No point in talking about something that'll never happen. 20/20 will always pay more money than test cricket. A lot of players will always strive to play in IPL than in Test cricket. That's capitalism for you. Same reason a teacher gets paid less than a software engineer.

I think this whole notion of Millionaires don't care playing for the country is a flawed one. Why do you think guys like Kobe play in the olympics?

Do you see their fans complaining about various platforms when they lose??????? Its upto the player to keep fit and be ready for every game. With that kind of workload they deserve it. Also they train rigorously during the offseason, plus they have many off season games and national team appearances for the top players. According to survey, NBA players on average have only one month off where they do absolutely nothing, this is straight after the season ends. But after that its basically training and playing off season games until the season starts again.

I have a guaranteed method for the future. In the past, other boards tried hard to emulate the competitiveness, aggression and professionalism of domestic Australian Cricket. Bringing over Australian coaches/experts and setting up the local domestic structure to mimic Australia's to try and keep up with their talent and success. . . Now the SAME has to be done with the current South Africa/England side. The BCCI should make eligible ANY ipl player for team India selection that plays for two seasons. That way the South African/Irish/Bangla, hell, even pakistani talent can come through and be "groomed" for Indian selection. Hell, the likes of KP/Morgan/Trott didn't sign up to domestic cricket in England because they were such British patriots, they went for the $$$$$. Here are a few differences... 1. NBA game lasts 50 mins with plenty of breaks, timeouts and replacements. 2. The training period may be 11 months or so but they don't train strenuously for majority of the time. 3. Those players get paid zillions of dollars. Cricketers are nowhere close to them. 4. NBA gets you at least couple of months break where you hardly do anything whereas even 3 weeks off time is a luxury to top cricketers like Dhoni. 5. National appearnaces for NBA players is almost like charity games for players. They show up but not much more.

I agree. But the point im trying to make is........some of these cricketers arent even fit from start in the first place. Zaheer had freaken 3 months of rest and ended up pulling his hammy on the first day....... Does that tell you more about the IPL or his fitness in general? :dontknow: Look at the physique and fitness of Broad, Anderson and Bresnan to our phasst bowlers of Ishant, Sreesanth and Praveen and Zaheer :giggle:

I think the key is Physique and Fitness. If you are a fat slob, you can't take the work load. If you are lean mean machine like RD is, then you can. Earlier the misfits could mask it and continue playing cause they had ample rest. Now they are required to play like real athletes, which they clearly are not. This doesn't mean the workload isn't too much, it definitely is, but is made worse by the fact that these guys weren't really fit to begin with.

Winning the NBA is believed to be more challenging than winning the Olympics. 2) Olympics happens once in 4 years. US can afford to send any team (with or without Kobe) & they will still be champs. If anything, Olympics is comparable to the IPL for most US basketball stars. 3) NBA players play for an average of 6 months a year. Cricketers play throughout the year. Just stand in the sun for 5 grueling days in any ground in India, you'll know how hard it is. And Uthappa has said in an interview that he'll be glad to give up his IPL contract for national jersey ? And you guys believe that ? Words are cheap. These days, all these guys know to utter the right sound bites. Dont fall for that. Workload is just one issue with IPL, IMO not even the central issue. Clearly IPL shifts the incentives for players in a manner that terribly undermines player motivations to play international cricket.

Btw, NBA comparisons came up cause there was a question about IPL not being able to produce any international players. I pointed out saying it is not the job of pro league to produce international players, typically same pool supplies to both. Well the Uthappa interview sounded very genuine. He was clearly dejected at not getting a chance to play for India. I sill believe that may of these guys still want to play for India, IPL money or not.
