asterix Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Going forward, should BCCI & Selectors think seriously about having different captains for different formats of game? Some of the progressive teams have already opted this policy and are reaping some rewards over the long run. Different captains in different formats will give some 'breathing space' for the coach. At present one captain carries his baggage of ideas or lack of it in different formats (especially Test cricket) and screws up the team in all the formats. Having captains in different formats will allow more prospects to get selected and perform (instead of getting denied of any chances due to capatins preferences and favoritism). The monopoly should end as it's affecting the growth of young players.. What do you guys/gals think..
mrinalmech Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 No. This is a one-off. No need to be tense. And anyway, who are the potential candidates for captaincy?
asterix Posted September 7, 2011 Author Posted September 7, 2011 No. This is a one-off. No need to be tense. And anyway' date=' who are the potential candidates for captaincy?[/quote'] This is not one-off. The pet player problem has been there for past many years.. I suggest Kohli to be captain of T20 matches. Dhoni to captain ODIs only. Gambhir to captain the Test team..
WC2011INDIA Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Dhoni should continue as captain of both ODI and Test formats. However, someone else should be the captain of the T20 format of the game. Virat, Suresh, Parthiv, Ajankya....anyone can be given that responsibility.
Lord Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 raina is yet to lose a match as t20 captain so is Vinay Kumar
1983-2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 No need to panick now but we can certainly look at this option in 12 months when srikkanth's tenure as a chief selector ends. if gambhir stays fit for most of the next 12 months and performs in test cricket then he should take over the Test captaincy, Dhoni should remain as an ODI captain, it should be Raina/Kohli for T2O captaincy.
Number Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 dhoni in test and ODIs. Kohli/Raina in t20s. Gambhir had a string of fitness problems , so I doubt he'll be successful captain for a long run.

I'm not saying now. As a long term plan I think this is the way forward and also groom various sets of players as per the format. That will inclrease the pool of the players, reduce fitness issues etc.
Sidhoni Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 MSD as a captain has won the IPL twice and CL once and ppl talking abt him being sacked! :WTF:
VRV Singh Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 I see no reason why we can't have a different captain for T20, no one really cares about it and that's how Dhoni got exposure in the first place. Changes in the other formats would be kneejerk and unnecessary. A new T20 captain is looking at at least one match per series plus whenever those tournaments are (every 2 yrs?). It's a reasonable enough chunk of the calendar to lessen workload/allow others to have exposure.
asterix Posted September 7, 2011 Author Posted September 7, 2011 Also I wish that by doing this, we reduce the chances of a group of senior players holding the coach, fitness coach, bowling coach, the board at ransome. If the technology is to be used, the players need to mind their own business and not force boards hands in issues like UDRs etc. The coaching staff should get some allowance to work out strategies. At present the bunch of senior players dictate terms and create a vaccum when the whole bunch gets injured or miss out any series. Mediocrity is rampant in the team (look at the bowling and fielding department). The coach needs to have different different captains so that one captain should'nt be allowed to groom mediocrity by having favorites and egos..
Cricket Tragic Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 MSD as a captain has won the IPL twice and CL once and ppl talking abt him being sacked! :WTF: Is this a serious post?
rkt.india Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 It is a good idea. It gives breathing space to everyone.
Sarkar Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 If the teacher doesnt teach the student well its not the student,s fault like wise if players dont perform then its coach,s fault how can our team go in drain after such a high note in world cup i say dont sack the captain sack the coach.
CG Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 no when going is good it seems well but when going gets tough diff captains will lead to chaos.

Yoda-esque Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 ^Mariyam trolling on the cricket talk threads now :cantstop:
Mariyam Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Whats the point of having different captains, when we have more or less the same side for the 3 formats? Lets face it, MSD is the best captain we have now. Arguably the best captain we ever had. It makes more sense to have 3 different teams for the different formats. Players who feature in more than one format should have more 'stringent' fitness training/ conditioning. Our disastrous performance this series is because of the following reasons (in order): 1) Pathetic bowling 2) Injuries 3) English are good 4) Batting also not upto the mark. 5) Captaincy. We should fix the first 4 before we try and fix the 5th.
