Blue Panther Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 ****ing news channels were reporting 6.6 when it was actually was 4.2. Scared the hell out of me. I was thinking is mother nature and dad doing something naughty and shaking the entire north?
Mariyam Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Glad to hear that there have been no casualties. Its been a bad day for Delhi. From what I gather, mobile networks weren't jammed after the blasts or the earthquake. The ambulances reached the blast spot within minutes. So did the police and other emergency services. Well done Delhi. :two_thumbs_up: :icflove: all Delhi ICFers

I was thinking is mother nature and dad doing something naughty and shaking the entire north? Seriously ,Now I know how they came with that figure .Live TV was Reporting those figures and epicenter near Sumatra (I was loling at that time ), and later everybody picked it from there . It was a real bad joke IMO ,and it caused undue panic all around because people thought there might be another one because of its high intensity . Sumatra 6.6 (5 sep 2011) http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usc0005pdr.php
Mariyam Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 ^^^ I'm not a 100% sure, but this is how it is: Initially, all the seismic recorders point at various directions and at the time of the earthquake only a few are pointing at the epicentre. So the reading they have may not be the best/most accurate reading. Once the news is out, all seismic pointers point to the epicenter and measure the impact/level of the aftershocks. Based on that they estimate how strong the initial earthquake would have been. Thats why the initial 6.6 was later revised. Saw this on NDTV just a few mins ago explained by some Prof. I may have not understood it properly.

kabira Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 ^yes in that case they should not publish 6.6 if they are not sure.
