Sachinism Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said India still need to improve in the bowling department after their 5-0 series victory over England at home. He expressed concern at the fact that India's seamers did not complete their allocated ten overs in many of the matches because they had given away too many runs. Both Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron impressed with their pace during the series but Dhoni said control was as important as bowling quick. "Of course it's a great series win," he said after the fifth ODI in Kolkata. "But our fast bowlers could not bowl 10 overs in many of the matches and we have to realise that's where we have to get better. It's good to have guys bowling quick but they also need to be able to keep the runs down and not give away a boundary an over. "Even though we've won at home, we need to realise that when we go abroad there may not be as much turn for our spinners and so we will not be able to win if our fast bowlers don't bowl well. In other countries our part-timers may not be as effective as they are here." The series win comes just a month after India were thumped in both the Tests and one-dayers in England. Dhoni said the criticism his side received after that tour did not worry him as he knew Indians were passionate about cricket and bound to react to a loss. "It happens: you are appreciated when you do well and that should be taken with an open heart. I was not too worried about criticism. We know cricket is big in India. It's a part of our life." India went into the ODI series against England with several senior players missing through injury, and Dhoni said while the influx of young players helped sharpen the fielding, the seniors were still needed. "It's difficult to replace the seniors talent-wise. But these youngsters have clicked as a unit. They are slightly better fielders. They may save 8-10 runs which matter in ODIs. They have reacted in the right way and been patient in waiting for opportunities to turn things their way. But we really can't really replace Sachin [Tendulkar], [Virender] Sehwag and Yuvraj [singh]." Dhoni was named Man of the Series after scoring 212 runs without being dismissed in the five games. He said that he would not be moving up the order, though, since he had adjusted his game to batting in the middle order. "The format of the game has changed. Now, with the Powerplays split, the situations are different. We have to be good at the slog overs and rotate strike as well. I have changed my style of batting. At No. 3 you can be flamboyant but at 5 and 6 you have to be careful." India will play a Twenty20 international against England in Kolkata on October 29 and the organisers will be hoping for a larger crowd after disappointing turnouts over the one-dayers. An overdose of cricket and the absence of some star players were the reasons Dhoni pointed out for the empty rows in the stands at Eden Gardens. "We have played a lot of cricket in India: the World Cup, IPL and then the Champions League T20 were held here. Big stars like Sachin were missing from this series. This is also one of the biggest stadia in India so it's not easy to get a jam-packed crowd every time." achilles Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 He had to be seen as humble by the media. His image consultant might have told him so.
Stuge Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 sure .. we need to knock out England in test matches under 100 in every innings ,when they play here in India next year .
BeautifulGame Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 Its true though. Praveen and Vinay Kumar giving too many easy runs early in the innings yesterday on a tough wicket was an example. And they (vinay in particular) are often poor at the death which means we have to use Jadeja and Ashwin in powerplays. "But our fast bowlers could not bowl 10 overs in many of the matches and we have to realise that's where we have to get better. It's good to have guys bowling quick but they also need to be able to keep the runs down and not give away a boundary an over. Hopefully this means Dhoni discards trundlers like Vinay and the likes of Varon and Umesh are our future.

It's good to have guys bowling quick but they also need to be able to keep the runs down and not give away a boundary an over. It means he will keep Vinay and PK who are accurate and goes for runs, not one who are fast and goes for runs.
BeautifulGame Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 NO.. read it. It means he will keep Vinay and PK who are accurate and goes for runs, not one who are fast and goes for runs. I think it was a straightforward answer to a media question rather than his preference.Dont think he means trundlers over bowlers who bowl with pace like Aaron. Atleast i hope that is the case :(( The West Indies and Aus squad selection will show a lot of who he prefers i suppose:pray:
The Realist Posted October 25, 2011 Posted October 25, 2011 "It means he will keep Vinay and PK who are accurate and goes for runs, not one who are fast and goes for runs." Really don't understand Dhoni's love for trundlers who go for 6+ an over and are so bad that its a liability if they complete their 10 overs as will effectively cost the game  Fast bowlers will win you more games than they lose, trundlers on the other hand lose more game than they win - somebody needs to engrave that on Dhoni's forehead so that he won't forget.

Look at who provided the crucial breakthrough yesterday. The match looked all but gone at that time at 129/0 in 21 overs. Aaron cleaned Cook, beaten for pace, a rare site in Indian cricket. Even in the last game England would have scored more than just 220 if not for Aaron cleaning the tail along with Bresnan who was making the game for England.

True.regardless of how good Vinay has been in the series the fact is that trundlers like him will rarely make it in International arene even in ODIs let alone test cricket. Even tail enders will always get 6+ an over from him without much risk.Though dont think Dhoni has any love for Trundlers and himself wants bowlers like Aaron and Yadav in the team. Otherwise he could have easily selected Arvind for his LA variations this series.
hiha Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 no no captain fool, u dont need 2 improve ur bowling , ur better than d trundlers lol...... i think d main reason u play these trundlers, is 2 show d world dat i am better than my fast bowlers lol
Laaloo Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 :finger: Dhoni If you had let Aaron open the bowling or gave him more overs at the death, or played him in the earlier matches, he would have finished the 10 overs and then you wouldn't be left with choosing Raina vs Tiwary to fill in the overs. :WTF: is he trying to say? This is the same as his logic on DRS system.

I am sure if he was good enough to clean up cook, he could have clean up Bresnan, Bopara, Meaker, and Finn.
maniac Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 To be fair to V.K....He was definetely not the worst seamer this series infact,he was better than all English seamers excluding Finn,PK,Umesh(I will get bashed for this but Umesh definetely had pace and is one for the future but overall cinsidering the situations he bowled in VK was better)
Pagalpanti Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Dhoni is spot on, Aaron and Yadav have shown they can bowl quick but they need to get their line and length right as well without sacrificing their pace. Otherwise they'll just be a liability giving easy runs to the opposition. VK needs to be discarded.
BERGKAMP Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 Let's not forget it was Aaron who started the England collapse, until then neither our seamers or spinners looked like taking a wicket.

Genuine fast bowlers most often go for runs in ODIs but they have the ability to take crucial wickets like Aaron took Yesterday. Yadav picked in Delhi match of KP and Patel.i

Genuine fast bowlers most often go for runs in ODIs but they have the ability to take crucial wickets like Aaron took Yesterday. Yadav picked in Delhi match of KP and Patel.i Don't agree with that theory...Tait is one of the most dangerous bowlers with his pace but still a liability on flat wickets which are used most of the times in LOI format more often than not and so is Johnson. Gul can be dangerous when he gets the swing right at his pace but most of the times he is wayward Pace and accuracy is what makes a deadly combo in ODI's...for eg;Malinga,Lee and in the past 2 c's from Wi and 2 W's from Pak,Donald,Mcdermott etc
Manny_Pacquiao Posted October 26, 2011 Posted October 26, 2011 i am not a fan of his captaincy, but He is right. yadav gave a boundary away every over. aaron wasn't economical either. vinay had one good game but was easy runs most of the time. some of the people here seem happy with india's bowlers clocking 140 kmph on the gun even when they bleed runs. who cares if they give away 70 in 10, as long as they are quick on the gun. india's tactics to win ODIs are perfect for the subcontinent. jadeja is a perfect 5th bowler, the part timers like kohli, raina, tiwary can chip in. you dont even need your seamers to complete their overs. this would never work outside india. you definitely won't see india sweeping australia aside for 5 straight ODI wins in the upcoming tour by playing like this. its a big concern for dhoni, and rightly so because the next world cup is not in the subcontinent. you need a pace attack that can take wickets and contain, and india don't have that right now. when india won the CB series, they did so because of good batting [obviously] but more importantly it was the seamers that wrecked the opposition - ishant, sreesanth were economical and effective wicket takers, and praveen also showed up with 2 four wicket hauls. spinners like harbhajan took some crucial wikets, but could only contain. if your seamers don't fire, you have no hope in hell of winning in australia. thats why the bowling has to improve. otherwise you will see more of performances like we saw in england - where the batting makes big scores with the team unable to defend them.
