Lurker Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 10. Khamoshi (1969) - Waheeda Rehman's masterpiece, but much more than that. A complex romance where you crave, look for, and find, your forgotten lover in someone else only to realize that reality is different Khamoshi deserves special mention simply because it gets overlooked so easily and so often. It would probably go down as one of those movies who have great songs in it, and even though most songs are of sad kind they are an absolute delight to listen, and watch. Its been ages since I have saw the movie but couple of memories stand out: a) Waheeda Rehman on a boat with a song in the background, perhaps Woh Shaam Kuch Ajeeb thi, and the boat meanders slowly under Howrah bridge. There is something very human and artistic about that shot. b) Sirf ehsaas hai ye, pyaar ko pyaar hi rahne do koi naam na do. A line in a great song that has somehow remained etched in mind forever. Although the entire song is a treasure, you just want the writer to put down his pen and not elaborate on his lyrics. Sometimes you wonder about why a writer, Gulzar in this case (who else??), didnt write more. This is one song that makes me wonder why didnt he stop right there. I know it doesnt make sense lol. xx

Pyaasa or kaagaz ke phool the one were he is a forgotten poet or something not sure and also surprised to see no raj kapoor movies getting a mention There is doccumentary I saw where rk was pretty popular in Russia back in the day

Gulzar and his metaphors..Aakhon se kaise dekhoge khushboo! Only his fans can understand. I rate him below Javed Akhtar (simple, straightforward words). But that's considered blasphemy!

He seems like he stumbled accidentally into lyrics writing as he is a writer first but what a pleasant accident it was all for all Hindi music fan! I personally developed a fascination for Javed Akhtar's songs much earlier than I did for Gulzar, perhaps because Gulzar took a while to sink in. Songs from movies like Sagar - Sagar jaise aankhon waali tera naam hai kya? hit home lot ealier than Aandhi's - Is mod se jaate hain. Later on Gulzar took the front seat but Javed Akhtar retains the ability to write some real gems. If you wanna compare the two, which probably one shouldn't, a good way to gauge that is perhaps look at how the two penned songs about Zindagi in 84. Two young men looking at life, Javed's is a more upbeat and straight forward full of life (in Mashaal), Gulzar's has a deeper, kinda sad and yet optimistic kind (in Sadma). I think it is probably his most complex films. And that is saying a lot for Gulzar Sahab's body of work. If I were to put it in one phrase, I think it is the "lack of moral judgement" of the characters be it Naval, Nasser or Rekha that I find fascinating. Usually things are pretty black or white in our movies. It is not something you see a lot in Indian cinema. Not to mention the stunning music. The movie truly has "Bergmanesque" moments. Am a huge fan of Gulzar. It was tough leaving out Achanak, Aandhi, Koshish, Mausam.

Aptly put :hatsoff: Gulzar has a great grip on human emotions, specially when it comes to man-woman relationship. The complexities are where he really comes alive, and Ijazat is one such creation where this is so obvious. Amongst other things I have loved about Ijazat is Shashi Kapoor, he makes an entry in last 2 minutes of the movie and kinda leaves you wishing he had more of a role. But what presence and diction! The way he tells Rekha - Kaun the bhai? Koi jaan-pehchaan? Koi waaqif? Arre batao bhi aisi bhi kya baat hai.....then stops and his fingers make a gesture as he realizes who Nasseer is... I think Shashi Kapur was one of those actors who never seemed bad in any role and yet went down underrated, in my opinion of course. And there are few actors who have better control on diction, be it Urdu or Hindi, everytime he addressed a heroine, even younger, it would typically be - Kahan gayin thin.. and not Kahan gayi thi....you could detect the old school mannerisms Am a huge fan of Gulzar. It was tough leaving out Achanak, Aandhi, Koshish, Mausam. Namkeen is another of his gem. The story of a truck driver (Sanjeev Kumar) who rents a home from a widow(Waheeda Rehman) who has 3 young and unwed daughters (Sharmila Tagore, Shabana Azami and Kiran Wairale). Good movie shot in pahadi area weaving human emotions just like the road on the valley. Also features one of my favorite songs - Rah pe rahte hain. Has helped me through many a rough tracks of life, specially abroad. yyKAwF5zKFY

Another time in a juhu holiday inn mingling with neena gupta and spouting how expensive it is to get kids into new schools ( donation wise )
