1983-2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 New Delhi: In an exclusive interview to NDTV, Anna Hazare explains why he thinks those who drink should be beaten and humiliated in public. Explaining how he got people in his village Ralegaon Siddhi and the surrounding areas to give up drinking, the 74-year-old Gandhian activist said, "...we will give three warnings because after all they are our people. But after the warnings, we drag that person to the temple and make him promise that he will never drink again in his life. Even after all this if they continued, we used to tie him in a pole near the temple and beat him." But this prescription seems to have little or no political support. In a debate on NDTV, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari likened this to the Taliban and said, "I think the Taliban used to say the same thing. By that analogy, you will possibly have to flog half of Kerala, three-fourth of Andhra Pradesh and about four-fifth of Punjab. So, I think that is quite a tall order." The BJP's Nirmala Sitharaman said that while here party supported Anna's anti-corruption movement, they were not in favour of such radical methods. "We are big supporters of anyone who fights against corruption. But on this, I won't even comment. That is his view, very well. Those are not the ways to implement anything," said Sitharaman. http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/anna-says-flog-people-who-drink-congress-bjp-slam-statement-151917&cp :hysterical::hysterical::hysterical:

coffee_rules Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 He is talking about people in rural India who are not educated, are getting addicted to alcohol which is cheap and harmful. Tarre ki baat kar raha hai. Best way to stop them to drink is to convince their wives to go on a sex strike. Cut the booty calls. http://www.wp-united.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3543
ganeshran Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 Misleading wording by NDTV. Anna's statement conveyed what was being done in Ralegaon Siddhi, while the headline suggests that it is a proclamation which anna wants applied across India. Though I dont agree with the premise that people should be punished for drinking, what Anna said is different from what NDTV portrayed it to be.
zen Posted November 22, 2011 Posted November 22, 2011 I haven't opened the ndtv link but when ppl don't have enough money to put their kids in school, provide 3 meals, etc and if they are burning money on alcohol, you need to provide them w/ proper guidance .... The question is despite providing proper guidance, if they still continue to do so, what measures can be taken (this is for someone who want a responsible society)?
