To be fair Philander is 26 and Starc is 21. Interesting fact about Starc is he was a wicketkeeper up until 15. So after just 6 years of bowling he now plays for his country. Pretty crazy stuff. Think about how much he could improve in another 6 years time!

No one keeps growing exponentially, esp not after you have reached international level. :) If you start at right age and have the talent and commitment, then 5-6 years is just about the right time one requires to reach the national level (does not mean you have to be in National squad - that would depend on few other factors) Otherway round - if you are not performing at national level after 5-6 years - then either you are not skilled enough, or not committed enough.

i just dont know whats special about starc lol balls can swing at 145 km/h too and honestly are much more deadly at that pace he clearly looked exausted his spell to kallis was best but after that he never bowled with that intensity more over i think he is over hyped that was good spell but in that conditions you expect good spells morkels bowls like that everyday when in form lol

Length is the key. I am very impressed with the new bowlers coming up in Australia. I like how some are getting such great pleasure in saying, "So what, we have Umesh Yadav" :) Don't blame them. We could never say that before.

Yes, Aussies are playing a poor opponent in NZ and tey weren't always spot on, but considering the fact that these bowlers are in their early 20s (barely) and how tey bowled, they did look quite impresive. My main point was that Aussies' demise in cricket is quite exaggerated and they may not be world beaters they once were, they definitely will continue to be one of the top teams based on the talent level on display.

But he brings the ball way back in compared to Johnson. Saw a few times that batsmen were hit or nearly hit while trying to leave hoping the ball would continue its line and not come back in. If he gets it right (slightly fuller) and with his speed, he would be tough to face - almost like pacier version of Irfan in his prime.

Yeah have not seen a lot of him, just a stylistic comment. MJ is a slinger who doesn't have a clue what ball he will bowl next. Certainly if Starc can get consistent movement, he will be a force. That is the Indian weakness.

I think out of these guys only Siddle will play against India. Siddle, Harris (if he manages not injure himself again) and Cummins is an attack our batsmen can lose sleep on. Llyon is certainly better than hauritz.

Are you talking about Cummins? He was bowling above 140kph for 1st innings and on the 3rd day as well. But on the 4th day he started bowling slower because it was over cast conditions. He also changed ends and it was slippery for him, another reason he slowed it down. You are underestimating him, he was by far Australia's best bowler and was keeping the pressure all the time. He was unlucky that he didn't pick up more than 1 wicket in the 1st innings. His over to Prince after getting out ABdV was the best I've seen of him. 2 big inswingers and then a big outswinger. I read good stories about Cummins at domestic level. He made his senior cricket debut at age 14 and took a 5-fer. He has only played 3 FC matches, on his 2nd match Marcus North said it was the best spell of bowling he has ever faced. Ed Cowan said the same thing on his 3rd FC match, after Cummins bowled a spell which he was literally unplayable. They both made centuries in those matches.

1219: What a delivery from Cummins! Cosgrove did brilliantly to keep that out. A truely great sandshoe crusher that ducks in to the left hander and fells the big man. NSW doing everything but get a wicket this morning. Tasmania 3-205. 1203: How is Cowan still there! Cummins ducks one back in to the opener and the ball brushes the off stump but doesn't dislodge the bail. How can a guy who bowls at 150km not knock the castle over? It also hits his front pad but the umpire turns down all appeals. Should have been out! The next ball swings away from Cowan and the opener plays and misses. A great over - probably the best of the match 1158: Cummins is causing both batsmen plenty of worries with his zip and movement but the balls are probably too good to catch the edge. Cosgrove has just hit a two down to third man off Copeland for his first runs in 45 minutes and 35 balls. It's an arm wrestle! Tasmania 3-191.

I think 2nd innings performance will determine who gets the chance between Starc and Pattinson for the 2nd test presuming Cummins is back. If neither of them perform well then I'd imagine Cutting may get a chance.
