Best Australian player of the last two decades

Who do you think contributed most to the success of the Australian team of 90s-00s? I guess it should be McGrath followed by Adam Gilchrist, Steve Waugh, Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting and Mathew Hayden in that order.

It's got to be Ponting. The fact is that their team was so good that if they split the team in 5 players each and played against each other, no one would win. All champions and each one better than the next one. ps. I know 5+5 = 10, but you can't divide 11 by 2, at least not in this case.

Definitely McGrath. When he played they rarely lost a series. 2005 Ashes would have been different had he remained fit.

shane warne. Look at aus, they have always produced good fast bowlers. (not as good as glen) but some able replacements can be found. Australian after shane and too lesser extent McGill called it quits they have struggled. Lyon is promising though.

TO me it has to be Warne - no one else has that presence on the pitch to create magic. Fact that he did not do well in India is the testament to the fact that a lot of the success elsewhere for Australia came due to Warne. That they failed in India was because of his failure. He provided the Winning edge to Aussies who have always had decent pacemen. No doubt McGrath is an all time great but other could have done 70-80% of job he did but there is no one like Warne. Ashes 05 was competitive because of only him while all the rest of the Aussie attack sucked.

i think in that series all the ashes matches they lost were the matches where mcgrath was injured lol

Mcgrath. Even if there was no warne they had Macgill who would have been first choice spinner for any other country.Also when Warne was banned replaced him admirably and Aussies where dominating comfortably.But whenever Macgrath was injured Aussies struggled (ashes 2005 and our 2004 tour case in point). Also Macgrath was part of all 3 of their world cup trumphs whereas warne played in only one of them.So Macgrath was more important player for Australia then Warne IMO.

Though he did not play much in that era Border had loads to do with instilling that famous winning mentality in what was then a not so great Aus side, he himself was a great bat of coiurse and the role model to S Waugh and Taylor . Id say it was Border.

I think its only Indians who rate Mcgrath or anyone above Warne, as Warne was not successful against India and Mcgrath was. Most Aussie fans and others would rate Warne higher. Over the last few decades, there were many like Mcgrath, some even better(Lille), but there was only one like Warne. Will walk into most World XIs, and was rated as 5 cricketers of the century
