Whats wrong with the team?

VVS has gone to **** since his match winning knock in South Africa. Gambhir is on his worst run of form since returning to the team and is not comfortable with bounce. Viru lacks the application to bat in seaming and swinging conditions (certainly has the talent but does not realise that he can't get away with his gung-ho approach outside the subcontinent) Dravid had 2 excellent series in Windies and England (when most other failed) but is looking scratchy now. Sachin has generally been in decent touch (even in some of the England matches) but is not cashing in. We have never replaced Ganguly. Zak is still our only world class bowler. Yadav is young and has potential. Ishant is turning into a hard working Sreesanth. Has a lot of talent but is simply not producing barring a game here or a game there.

First, great post!

Here are the problems I think. 1. Our young guns are too spoiled... thanks to IPL. Guys like Kohli and Gambhir should be royally kicked out of tests because they pretty much consistently fail to perform in Test matches. We've come to expect the same kind of performance from them as we've seen in the ODIs and these guys simply do not have the temperament for Test Cricket.
While I agree that they don't have the temperament for Test cricket, I don't think it is a question of being spoiled. IPL and 50-over LOIs are the new reality. Test cricket is arcane in India, and the sooner we accept it, the better.
3. IPL Matches: The ultimate bane of International Cricket. I am all for capitalism and free market taking it's full swing.. I am not even much concerned about whether IPL matches tax the players too much physically (even though that does happen).. I am more worried about IPL RUINING the hunger in players to perform internationally. Too much of anything makes the value go down.. and I think that is exactly what IPL has done. Youngsters have too much money now and there is no motivation or desperation to prove themselves.
I think the biggest success of IPL is that it serves as a venue for "fringe" talent to earn a good living. And that alone outweighs all the non-monetary reasons for not supporting it.
4. Emotional Quotient: Indians are emotional first.. and rational second. A minor setback can affect us emotionally and we cease to rationalize our way out of tight situations. We lose faith and hope pretty easily while lamenting our sorry state of affairs. Look at Ishant and see how emotional he gets after every delivery. He has this "thakela" attitude when his balls don't deliver a wicket.
All the more reason we need to stop pretending that we value test cricket, accept our strengths and strategically plot our dominance in LOI cricket. We are good at it and can do it better than anyone else.
5. Coach: Our coach is worthless.. Not because he is entirely responsible for our failures.. but I don't think he is effective in pointing out the mistakes our team makes over and again. I don't think he thinks about strategy and I definitely don't think he is "coaching" anybody on anything.. because I have not seen any of the above being manifested in any of our games.
Completely and totally agree.

:haha: Couldn't have said it better! He tries too many things and puts too much emotion behind every ball.

what's wrong w/ the team? it's all in the MINDSET on how to approach the game. If you're negative, your body language is negative...opponent WILL take advantage of that. Start of Day 2...everyone on the field looked tired, subdued as if OZs had a lead of 500 already. WTF was that? NO word of encouragement from Dhoni for his fast bowlers. Shoulders dropping, just going through motions and getting ready to get back to the comforts of their hotel.

The problem is we cannot abandon Test Cricket and yet call ourselves as a world class team. Test Cricket will never die.. and will continue to remain as the ultimate benchmark for a team's worth... and rightfully so.

That is our perception of world class. Let's change it. For all practical purposes, our players and our administrators have already shown that they are not cut out for the longer version. Why not use it to our advantage in other areas? Win 4 50-over WCs, 4 T-20 WCs in a row & 85% of all LOIs played over a course of 10 years, and we will have created a new benchmark. Time to rattle the cage.

We need 3 in form batsmen as in 2008 (atleast 2 were super good in 2008 Dravid 93 in Perth and Sehwag saved the blushes in the 4th test). Tendulkar and Laxman were very good. Now, all three are bad. Plus the tail - Kumble and Harbhajan saved India couple of times - 100+ partnership at Adelaide). We need others to chip in as well. India does well abroad when the batsmen do well and the bowlers perform at the backing of strong batting. Whenever batting fails, our bowlers fail too.

Batting to put it simply. They keep struggling to get to 300. Atleast they had an excuse in West Indies. But a line up that has Viru, Gauti, Dravid, VVS, Sachin struggling to get to 300 is beyond comprehension. Traditionally India's success is based on batting performances. When it fails very badly we get truly exposed.

around last year this time we were on high...beaten SA in Durban and did well in Cape town. How things have changed. Team is almost same...Belief is very low at the moment...I don't know I am positive guy but their body language is not good..blame should go to leadership...Dhoni, Duncan Fletcher, SRT etc...
