When did this word - Chinki - made it to Indian mainstream vocabulary anyway? I spent 4 years of my Engineering with about 100 or so, if not more, folks from NE states and can never remember this word being uttered. Or back my hometown which sees a lot of Budhist tourists. Or in Bombay where I worked. Honestly this word was introduced to me, and most folks like me, when we travelled abroad and were introduced to whole Asian Chinki thingy. I agree it is disrespectful but since when did it became a mainstream word in the first place??
Just typical stereotypes mostly in the North and Central part of India, just like my friends in Delhi believe that these "Chinkis" eat dog meat.

^Nagas do eat Dog meat , infact its one among their special dishes . Selling Dog meat in Nagaland is as common as fish being sold in Mumbai . Dont know how do they manage to eat that crap thou , some similarities with chinese there for sure .

If someone is cool with their friends calling them that then it is light hearted banter but if a stranger says it then it is not. Unfortunately my mother and aunt use the term ching chong when referring to people who are from North East India or the Far East and general (never to their faces) and i have been trying to get them to stop that bad habit for years.

I had a colleague of sri lankan origin in Australia who called people from the sub continent as "Curries" to me thats insulting and if not racist then at least stupid. Since she herself from the sub continent I dont know what made her feel ok to say something like this, I for one told her that I dont like to be identified by a food item. Now for chinki, there maybe people who are ok or some friends might not object but that doesnt mean that its a nice thing to say.
