Raina is talented albeit with few weaknesses. He is not going to be Alan border reincarnation by any stretch of imagination. But he is not as bad as he is looking. He should first accept his shortcomings in this format and work on it systematically. Even in one dayers his role is not to buildi an innings. With more exposure to T20 and late order finishes in ODIs he absolutely has zero chance of learning the art of building a long innings. NO first class matches. So in the interest of his future he needs to take part in first class games and if possible county games even if it means he plays 300 days per year. In one dayers he should be gradually used to build inning rather come after 40th over and whack few sixes. His first instinct is to play away from the body which is what works for him in the slog overs a crime at the test level. He is a good team player. He is not completely out of the picture. He has some time to work on those issues. But that needs lot of dedication .

What causes that kind of reckless rush of blood? Just 8 or 9 balls he had faced. This is not T20 or ODI where there is pressure to score if you have faced 9 dot balls. You can take your time and there is so much time left in the match. He has played Intl cricket for long enough to know how to read a situation. And this is just a match on an Indian pitch. (I mention Indian pitch because he knows he is capable of batting on this pitch for longer duration) So what caused Raina to do something as reckless? I know only he will know (or perhaps even he does not). We can only analyze or speculate. This thread is not to criticize him, but just trying to understand what sort of pressure and psychological mindset will cause that kind of shot selection for Raina out of nowhere? (when the order of the day was to stay on and support Kohli at the other end)

Its almost like he had some pressure built up before even he walked out or before he even started the Test match, and he just totally snapped in a psych sense.

He is under pressure to perform and wants badly to do well. He is not clear mentally. Plus coming down in a pressure situation he thought he would hit out of it like he does in ODIs. He gets some pretty low scores in ODIs too but those can be neglected in ODIs but in tests these are unpardonable. He is hit and miss. Some days when he gets going he will get runs else get out pretty cheap. Not test Temperament.

Agreed. Which is why I felt bad for him, he squandered a great opportunity. He is an honest trier, sincere guy, good fielder, but seems like his Test aspirations are over with this series. He has helped run chases in ODIs, but could not transition to Tests. It is one thing to perish to a technical flaw, its another to play a reckless shot with ur side in a tricky chase.

Feel sorry for the guy , but hes just not cut out for tests .. The pressure has been right on him since the T20WC in England , everyone seems convinced that hes not test material ..its clearly got to him , makes him play shots he normally wudnt even in ODI's . Hes not such a bad player imo , capable of avgn 40+ , seen batsmen with much worse technique do that ..but 40+ may not be enough for Indians .
