Old guy Posted September 3, 2012 Posted September 3, 2012 from cricinfo- Dhoni pointed out another reason to persist with Raina. "It's important to have a left-hander at six or seven. This series [Daniel] Vettori wasn't playing but if a left-hander is there, the mix becomes ideal. Gambhir is at the top of the tree and then you have a fair number of right-handers. Then it's useful if you have a left-hander at six if the wicket is turning. But that doesn't guarantee anyone a place in the Test side." drop dhoni play patel :two_thumbs_up:

To me it doesn't look like Raina is a guarantee against English.

CSK Fan Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 To be honest, I have seen players like Sachin, Lara do this at the early part of their career too. They used to rush out to spinners to stamp their authority very early in their innings. Its not a bad ploy when it succeeds though if it doesnt work you end looking like a jack@ss. Usually its a very calculated risk and not a rush of blood

What a poor excuse by MSD to justify his favoritism based selection. So if Laxman had not retired he would've played this left handed slogger Raina and one out of Pujara or Kohli wouldn't have been there as they are right handers. Disappointed.
punjabi_khota Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Fineleg, go play a real sport. Maybe you will find out. Pretty hard to understand sitting on a couch.
CoverDrive Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 i dont think he is long term test material. But felt bad for him. I was in the ground on saturday and his innings that day was really really good. He counter attacked perfectly and really rescued us. Some if his shots were incredible. His pull shot was hit so hard it made on of the loudest sound of the bat that day. Guy is talented and do very well in shorter formats. Needs to work on his technique.
ravishingravi Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 I wish Raina well. He is great team man. But I want to see Rohit at No. 6 against England. Raina probably needs a county season. I really think some of these players are misguided about their career moves and what I'll serve them over long term including Kohli. Our players have to be put through a county season at. The very to master their skills. Raina once identified as a talent should have been thinking about how to make his game more rounded. How hone his technique with the stroke play. We are expecting these guys to play the hapless domestic bowlers and IPL and become world beaters abroad. Same has gone wrong ith Rohit. Chappell nailed it when he said that playing at very low level he ha got into bad habits.

rkt.india Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Raina batted the same way in the first inning as well and that paid off for him and failed in the 2nd inning doing the same thing. Thing with Raina is his loose defense. He is not confident about his defense both against pacers and spinners when there are close-in fielders around and then he tries to attack. Attack is the best defense when you are unsure and that paid off in 1st but failed him there in 2nd innings.
rkt.india Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Bhajji:dontknow: Bhajji was not scheme of things neither tests nor ODIs. They denied NOC to even Rahane who wanted to play county this season.

saneindian Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 He is not a test player right now. Only way for him to play tests for India again is to score 1000+ runs each in a couple of domestic seasons scoring plenty of 100s. May mean missing some ODIs and T20s but so be it if he is serious about his test career.
Haarkarjeetgaye Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Not at all sir. Raina needs to move to 5. He needs more time with senior pros in the middle
achilles Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Raina is a short-term fix in Tests. He can ONLY play successfully at Home. We are all aware of his record overseas and whosoever thinks that he can turn it around is clearly watching a lot of reruns of his CSK matches.

Vikas Bhatt Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Everyone has given up on Raina sensibly. But Dhoni is hellbent on retaining his buddy at all costs. He wants to give him a 'a chance to be groomed for no. 6' slot. Lets all pray for a miracle of injury in T20 so we don't have to carry this passenger in the crucial home series vs England.

I don't wish him bad but I don't see any other way Dhoni will keep him out and trying his faith in such a high profile revenge series is what we don't need.
