Tiger-Don Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Welcome ICF'ers... I had nothing to do and was think about the future and I came up with this question: Would you teach your kids your Native language? Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam, Tamil and all the others. Please share your responses!
ravishingravi Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I don't know my native language. And I hate kids. So, I guess it is unlikely.
Prakat Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 ^ ravi what's this all about? What's your native language? @OP Yes. We are planning to teach our kids both our native languages at least enough to have polite conversations.
jind Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 ofcourse, Punjabi is must jind mahee je chaleon pardes, kade na bhuleen oye kade na bhuleen apna des(punjab) te apni boli(punjabi) oye ahaaa B->
Number Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 You should leave them for a few days in your native village/town when they are 7-8 yrs of age during their school's vacations. They'll learn it quite quickly while mingling with other kids there. But it can sometimes backfire and they may pick up some bad words, habits or accent and you'll tough time getting them away from it. :--D

I have been practically debarred from all family connections which I don't mind :) just exaggerating.

DomainK Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 I think it will depend a lot on whether I marry a woman from my native state or not. If I do, my native language will be the main spoken languahe at home and kids will pick it up easily. If I don't, which is the most llikely scenario, the kids will probably get to learn as much their grand parents teach them.
Stuge Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 First question will I marry someone to have kids :hysterical:
Desi Cartman Posted July 25, 2012 Posted July 25, 2012 Its more tricky than what people think, my father spoke Himachali when he was growing up and he usually communicates in Punjabi with mum. I can understand punjabi and speak a little and I can hardly understand himachali. So now my daughetr is going to grow up in US-AUS and might visit India 2-3 weeks every year or 2. We at home speak Hindi but since I wasnt expected to be fluent in Hindi, I wont force my kids to learn reading and writing a language that they'll never use for business purpose, I will offer to teach but I cant force. I am sure my kids will be able to understand Hindi well but wont be able to speak as clearly as kids in India do. Even now she just goes blank when we ask her something in Hindi. My wife worked with kids and she used to tell me stories of kids at childcare who were born in Aus but their parents forced Hindi onto them and they found communicating in school very difficult especially if they started school a little late (3+) I have a friend who tried to teach his kid Hindi, after 6 months this 5 year old stopped talking to his parents and then he said he finds it very uncomfortable and decided to avoid talking altogether. Its very complicated and in short, kids should be taught the local language first and then language spoken at home and when they are a little older then they can be offered a chance to learn it
Tiger-Don Posted July 25, 2012 Author Posted July 25, 2012 I will force/make my kids learn English and Hindi. These 2 are must! But if they wanna learn bangla then i'll teach them but it aint required.
