Another thing I liked about Chennai is that people aren't pseudo-sophisticated. You can sit aaraam se in your veshti at a 5-star and eat with your hands and nobody will give you a second look.. Don't be affected by the negative reviews/experiences of posters here I am sure you will like the place.

But how does having the world best textile mill/ lathe/idli/assembly line for Tata Indica make any difference to a tourist/ a person on a STA. All these are not tourist attractions. What are the to do things in and around Chennai for an outsider?
If you really want to experience the best of what TN has to offer, you need to look beyond madras. Sure, the Marina is unique and so is mahabalipuram but in terms of a unique cultural experience, you need to look towards other parts of the state. There are some wonderful places to stay in and around Coimbatore (small towns like pollachi) that are nestled right next to the western Ghats. They offer some tremendous potential interms of wildlife tourism near that area. But most importantly, the people there are some of the most hospitable you can find anywhere. Even the brand of tamizh they speak is completely different to what is is spoken in the cities. And best of all, the weather there, especially outside the peak winter months is extremely temperate. Ooty and moonar (all famous hill stations) are driving distances from Coimbatore.. South TN offers a completely different flavor and cultural experience and so does certain parts of Madras. Especially in Madras, there are still some areas that are heavily populated by Brahmins and you can experience the some of the most unique traditions that is exclusive to the Brahmin community.

:mad: Come on Anonymous. We've had this chat before too. You're the one stereotyping me here by calling me a typical northie who has those set in stone stereotypes about Chennai. The fact of the matter is, I'm not typical at all. I'm an extremely talented, witty, :cool: and a very modest individual. And I'm not even a northie. :mad: Do you see me abusing left,right and centre just because I forgot my kerchief in the car or because it rained and I don't have an umbrella? My detailed travel tips to MHR123 were based on my experiences in Chennai? Why are you discounting my experiences? I didn't say that it is a bad place. In fact of all the metros that I've been to, the Chennaiites have been the most well spoken and helpful people. Its just that for a person from Mumbai, Chennai has nothing new to offer. Neither is there any great historical/architectural site (apart from Mahabalipuram, put thats many kms away from Chennai), nor is your party/dance workshop/activity scene all that hep. But I've heard that Chennai finally has caught up with the rest of India and has access to the internet via dial ups. MHR123 may not get that bored after all.
Now that is witty :hatsoff: I'll still label you a typical narthie. you visit chennai and do what? the routine "stereotypical" tourist stuff and base your arguments to give advice to someone who is going to live there. Is your "EXPERIENCE" really the deal clincher here Lawayer madam???

Trolling aside, I had spent a good week in and around Chennai. I was deputed 'on site' for Trouble Shooting a 'Sizer' equipment (which is normally used to separate different sizes of sugar), which my company supplied to a big Sugar plant in Villupuram.. So here I was, in Chennai, having no idea how to go to Villupuram (a nice, sleepy town on the way to Pondicherry). I was asked to go to our Chennai based sales office to 'get further instructions and also get some funds for my expenses' (Oh the pleasures of working on site, you have to experience it). The Autowallah scammed me from Railway station to 'locate my Sales office', but I eventually reached there and was happy to meet the Manager (typical Madrasi dude, wearing suite and having chandan on his forehead.. okay, not typical..). He gave me all the instructions, moolah (which I was happy get my hands on) and an assitant to drop me off to the bus station on my way to Villupuram. Travelling in a TN State bus is also a nice experience. In the heat I was only looking forward to the glimpses of sea, which appear when you travel on the TN East coast road towards Pondicherry. I had no idea where to get off (The Sugar plant & the guest house was in the outskirts of Villupuram). But had already spoken with the bus conductor and he dropped me exactly near the guest house. The stay in Villupuram, in the Guest house, working in the Sugar Plant, getting your work done using cortract workers, is another story. There were not many food options in the guest house but it was a comfortable stay. Got my job done before time (didn't knew much about Chidambaram, whose plant it was, else I would've kept the job pending.. :mad:), made a quick trip to Pondycherry. On my way back, spent a day in Chennai, saw a Tamil movie in a Multiplex theatre, bought some nice bargain Kanjiwaram sarees from Nelli (a famous shop), ate as much as possible all sorts of Southern food and came back happily. My Mother, MIL & Wife were delighted to get excellent Kanjiwaram Sarees. All in all it was nice and happy trip. Given a chance I would again go back to Chennai, Villupuram, Pondicherry for a nice trip.

MHR - Dude you are dead...:giggle: I was there for a year and half...:(( It was living hell for the first 6 months... it is very difficult to find a decent apartment. Dont pay anything to broker before you finalize an apartment - brokers will find numerous ways to ask for initial commission etc before you even see any apartments. Try to make friends... I made few friends and after that things were good... do not worry too much and learn some basic Tamil. you would be fine. :two_thumbs_up:
