Vijay.Sharma Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 She is now India's biggest female sports star ahead of Sania Mirza.Mirza is not even in the same universe, leave alone ballpark, of Saina Nehwal. It's like saying "Kapil is India's greatest all rounder ahead of Reetinder Singh Sodhi" or "Anil Kumble is India's greatest spinner ahead of Sairaj Bahutule" or "Sachin Tendulkar is India's greatest batsman ahead of Ashok Malhotra"

She is the biggest tennis sportswomen India had by a long, long mile and thats quite an ahcievement. Sometimes I feel we are pretty unfair to her

Crookbond Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Why are we comparing tennis to badminton? :dontknow:

She is the biggest tennis sportswomen India had by a long' date=' long mile and thats quite an ahcievement. Sometimes I feel we are pretty unfair to her[/quote']She might be big in Indian Tennis. There are other Indian sportsmen who are the best in India but no great shakes in the world in many sports. The fact remains that Sania Mirza has not achieved (as a singles player) even 1% of what Saina Nehwal has achieved on the world stage. Saina Nehwal has won championships beating top ranked players in the world. What has Sania Mirza done as a singles player? Doubles and Mixed Doubles are basically for the lesser players. Todd Woodbridge - Mark Woodforde and Lee-Hesh are not even in the same universe as Federer or Agassi or even Jim Courier as Tennis players. Sania Mirza is good in her own right but can she be elevated to compare with Saina Nehwal? It would be an insult and a slap on the face to Saina Nehwal if we do so

asterix Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Sania was there when nobody was there.. :icflove: Now Saina is here.. :icflove: :hatsoff: to both and 'love all'...

Badminton already had players like Gopichand and Padukone who were doing good in singles on a world scale. In tennis, who was the singles players who have done better than Sania? In that respect she has been ground breaking. You cannot just compare across sports

Paes, though not very good at singles, has been a prominent world class player.
straighttalk Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 very interesting read..apparently the chineese players were selected based on their performance against saina..not their individual rankings http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/article3701379.ece
Prakat Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Sania was a promising player when she came on to the scene. Problem is she is still promising. Saina has gone the distance and delivered to her potential something we may never be able to say about Sania.

Somewhere I read that 2nd ranked player lost to 3rd ranked player in the semis intentionally, so that they can send stronger opponent against Saina for the Bronze and China can get all 3 medals. Sending 3rd ranked player against Saina was risky.
Vilander Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 Sania is the Kournikova of India yeah but one has to note the :sherlock: facial and anatomical differences...:giggle:
Swing_n_Speed Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Sania is the Kournikova of India That best sums it up. Kinda embarrassing for us Indians though cos Sania ain't even all that hot.
Texy Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 Apparently, Saina's grandmother wanted a boy when Saina was born....wonder what she would have thought abt Saina's accomplishments, if she was alive today.
