There are other Indian sportsmen who are the best in India but no great shakes in the world in many sports. The fact remains that Sania Mirza has not achieved (as a singles player) even 1% of what Saina Nehwal has achieved on the world stage. Saina Nehwal has won championships beating top ranked players in the world. What has Sania Mirza done as a singles player? Doubles and Mixed Doubles are basically for the lesser players. Todd Woodbridge - Mark Woodforde and Lee-Hesh are not even in the same universe as Federer or Agassi or even Jim Courier as Tennis players. Sania Mirza is good in her own right but can she be elevated to compare with Saina Nehwal? It would be an insult and a slap on the face to Saina Nehwal if we do so Tennis is a tougher game to crack than badminton on the world scale, simply because of the fact that competition is MUCH higher in tennis. Tennis is definitely the #1 individual sport in the world by a big margin, in terms of # of players and popularity. I mean you could count Geet Sethi etc. as the ultimate Indian world champs, but then remember that the competition is again not at the same level.

I recollect watching her first Oz Slam match against Serena.Although she lost (I think 6-1 6-4),the power of her forehand surprised even Serena. A bit of improvement in her fitness would have stood her in good stead and she could have been in the top 20 for a very long time. I think media hype got to her and she fell by the wayside.

While Saina has cracked it to win major international tournaments (singles), Sania has not. I am not belittling Sania Mirza - I think she is a trendsetter in her own right. What I am saying is that Saina Nehwal is in a totally different league to Sania Mirza when it comes to accomplishments as a singles player

I am sure with Saina and Gopi together, we can definitely train some good young players in next 10-12 years. Very proud of her achievement. May God bless her with more success.

Fair enough, and I wouldn't begrudge her any kudos if she had given it her best. She struggled with her weight and fitness (non-injury related) of all the things. You are supposed to have that Pat by the time you leave the amateur circuit. You can't in all fairness be overweight in an competitive, athletic sport and still claim that you are giving it your best shot. Poor management, combined with an abject lack of commitment on her part and she ultimately threw away her own chances. Pretty pathetic actually.
