He cannot bat at no7 as that slot is for Dhoni or wicket keeper. Dhoni is not a top order test batsman.So he cannot move up and other six slots are of batsmen and I don't think given the form and fragile batting which Indians have now they can afford Ashwin to be their no 6 batsman. Ashwin is batting at the right spot no8 which is usually reserved for best batsmen among bowlers. Bhajji might have been a slogger who improved his batting as he got experience. But Bhajji never was in team as batsman and once his wickets dried up he was rightly shown the exit door. Unless Ashwin like Sehwag becomes top notch batsman who can be in team just for his batting he is in team as a bowler first.His performance against England was just awful and he looked lost and out of ideas that too on Indian pitches.

M Vijay, Mukund, Karthik can still play. But will they have enough drive to push themselves for achieving greater goals. Ashwin has lot of support from captain. So he should justify his captain's faith. By all accounts he is pretty studious. He knows what to do on a given surface. Just that he is not executing it well.

If you are in strike team as bowler be it odis, tests or T-20s.You cant end up with with just 3 wickets as main spinner in 3 match odi series.

Bhajji is a non-issue now, he is done as far as i am concerned. I would play Ojha as the primary spinner and Ashwin as the 5th bowler in ODIs. He is not a strike bowler, that is obvious by now, but he can give you 10 overs at around 40 runs that is damn good, especially if he can bat a bit.

WRT, VVS Laxman, he has been an underachiever for me and there is no VVS in our team now and he has batted better than most top order batsmen in recent tests.

Just that he is not executing it well.[/quote'] L Siva is the most irresponsible fellow I have ever seen or read about.This guy continues to blame everybody else other than himself for his lack of success. He talks as if others were at fault for his short career forgetting fact that once people sorted him out and stopped gifting him wickets on his full tosses he had nothing and was banished from the team. If Ashwin is following his advice then god can only save him.

Just because Ashwin has batted better in couple of series he does not become no6.If he is in the team as a part of four bowlers then unless he is taking wickets that too in home tests he cannot be in the team.I dont think India is going to play a test with five batsmen and Ashwin as all rounder , Dhoni at no7 and play four bowlers any time in near future. I never said VVS overachieved, All I said was batsman of VVS's caliber played at no6 and Ashwin is no way a no6 in tests.Batting at home will not be problem for India in spite of recent struggles.They are in funk right now which they will come out of it but bowling is a big problem and they cannot play a bowler just because he bats well at no 8.

Can't Jadeja do the same and be much better in field than Ashwin.Why do we need Ashwin then.Jadeja is in and out of team for one reason he cannot bat consistently.

Ashwin was given the lead spinners role from the 1st test and he is part of arguably the worst bowling attack in the last decade.

What's that got to do with this thread lol Anyway to answer your question he did have great records against some quality batsmen like Ponting and Amla. And was like the opposite of Ashwin who bullies minnows. Harbhajan is probably one of the few spinners (if not only) in world cricket to average below 30 against the best 2 teams of his time SA and Aus. Not the best in the world recently but at a certain stage he was right up there. Even Murali and Kumble were above 30 against SA or Aus (both in Kumble's case)
