Reception of Jadeja's triple hundred and our thought process

Here is what a cricinfo writer said and is worth a discussion.

Morning to all, as we start day three of the Ranji Trophy's fifth round. Before we move on to updates from all the matches going on across the country, a word on Ravindra Jadeja, and the reception to his landmark of becoming the first Indian to make three first-class triple tons. Some of the reactions have been seriously sickening, to the tune of, 'it says so much about our first-class cricket if even Jadeja can get three triples.' Give the man a break, I say. Such reactions are a reflection of our culture, which is obsessed with big names and perceptions. I can only imagine the euphoria if Sachin Tendulkar had achieved the feat. Even if Cheteshwar Pujara had done the same, the reactions would have been markedly different, acknowledging the patience of the man to bat long periods. Hasn't Jadeja done the same? And if our pitches are so flat, why has no one else made three triples before? We are obsessed with looking at achievements through the prism of the achiever's image. Absolutely disrespectful to a fantastic deed by someone so young.
Jaddu;s statement in Indian Express.
So said Ravindra Jadeja, to Devendra Pandey of the Indian Express. "I still can’t believe that I have scored another triple hundred, but it was my aim to score big runs," Jadeja said. "People consider me a T20 and an ODI specialist and I knew that if I score 60s or 70s, it will not help me or my team. Now, I hope that people will change their impression about me and consider me good enough to score runs in the longer format too." Three triple centuries should ideally be enough to shut millions of mouths. Unfortunately, nothing is ideal ...

There are 2 aspects here: 1. Appreciating a rare cricketing feat in isolation, which certainly must be done because it is a terrific effort. 2. Clamoring for his inclusion in the national team on the basis of this triple hundred, which is rubbish because he had 2 triple hundreds before this one and was still crap. What's going to change with a third triple? For team selection a hundred on a tough track against good bowling would provide more insight.

He's the most underrated cricketer on the face of this earth, only 24 now & can be developed into a pretty good all-rounder.He can be a good fit at no.6 in test cricket as I rate him higher than other left handers like Yuvi & Raina in test cricket.Got good technique, better than many of our current test batsmen & a v.good temperament(u can't score 3 triples without this). He's accurate bowling & excellent fielding makes him even more handy. He has got a bowling avg of 27.5 in FC cricket that neans he's a pretty good bowler. Some will say he has scored easy runs on pattas but then that applies to his bowling too.On those very pattas he avgs arnd 27 with the ball.We need to look into our future test squad & he should be part of that.In near future our first Xi in test matches will look like this:- Rahane,Gambhir,Pujara,Kohli,Rohit,Jadeja,Saha,Irfan,Ashwin/Ojha,Shami,Umesh. Reserves:- Openers-Mukund,Chand. Middle-order batsmen-Baba Aparajith,Mandeep Singh. Keeper/bat-Smit Patel,Dinesh Karthik/Naman Ojha. Spinners-Harmeet Singh,???????????? Seamers-Ishant,Aaron,Awana. Many unknown & new guys will also come up in next few years but our test squad will look pretty much like this with Sehwag,Sachin,Dhoni,Zaheer & Harbhajan(already gone) gone.

He hasn't got a chance in the longer format.I don't think ODI & t20 is his game.

How do you know he was crap? because you saw him in ODIs and T20s that may not suit to him. PS: I am not asking him to be included in test team but you cannot write off a youngster. Let him give chances on A tours and warm up games which he has not got yet and see how he does.

Have you seen his shoddy technique against short pitch bowling? Have you seen his lack of foot movement while playing the drive? How is that going to transform from one format to another? There is nothing wrong in giving him chances in A tours and warm up matches and I am sure he will get his chances over the next year if he keeps putting in strong performances. Just saying don't expect too much out of him because he has a poor fundamental technique against quick bowling which is not going to magically transform in the longer format.

Yeah technique is overrated that's why we have seen the likes of Yuvraj and Raina lighting score sheets on fire and the likes of Dravid and Tendulkar being failures.

There is every possiblity here that we are looking at a youngster with great temperament and quality of playing a long test innings, many ICF'ers (including me) have always hated jadega due to his antics in ODI's and T20's, but scoring 3 triple centuries in test is no mean feat...a hyperbole, if dravid was to debut in this era, got early chances in ODI's and T20's, faired poorly and was out of contention for life?? Would'nt have we missed a gem of a test player? So lets reserve our comments on jaddu's test perfromance...Jadeja deserves a call up in the test side.

Yuvraj n Raina didnt even score runs in FC cricket, were picked based on ODI performances which is sheer stupidity. the likes of Chanderpaul,Smith have shown that you can score runs with supposedly poor techniques if u know how to manage n have the temperament.I'm sure you know of other names

What's wrong with Chanderpaul and Smith's techniques? Smith has a minor technical fault of playing around his pads and has fallen to it on occasions as well but besides that he is technically very sound. Jadeja's technical fault is nothing minor like that. You say technique is not important - Gambhir's entire struggle is technical. When he was scoring runs he was not poking outside the off stump and now he is failing because of that technical problem. It's the same man and same temperament. Obviously, technique is not everything and you need other attributes to succeed as well but it is a very important part of being successful in test cricket. You can get away with some minor technical glitches but not with something as base as Jadeja's technique. EDIT: And I am sure if you remove Yuvraj's test runs there won't be much difference between his and Jadeja's FC record.

Should get a chance on the A tours to play the longer format. However his run scoring in FC cricket should not get him an entry into the ODI/T20 side as a lower order batsman and a spinner who could bowl a few overs. Even though he has hit many 6s and 4s during these triple 100s and scored very fast, he doesn't quite have the hitting abilities needed of a number 7 batsman yet.

As far a i know yuvraj singh scored few hundreds in FC Recently and averages 45 In First class cricket.Jadeja does not only lack in Technique but temperament also we all know how he handles pressure. His triple hundreds show he has good powers of concentration but i would really like him to score in A tours and against good ranji sides on good pitches before changing my mind.
