Rapes occur in India, not Bharat, says RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat / BJP jumps to defense

I was only doubting the electoral impact of this alleged statement (RSS says that it is a misquote). Very few people, even in urban India actually care about what Mohan Bhagwat says. Of course, I dont agree with any such statement that women should confine themselves in their homes, and I dont think thats what he said - I saw a larger portion of his statement and he was mocking the contract model of marriage.
People do not care about Mohan Bhagwat because he is well Mohan Bhagwat who makes such silly statements. That does not take away the fact that he is BJP chief. The de factor leader of 2nd largest party. I can bet if Arun Jaitley or Shushma Swaraj or Arun Shourie was in Bhagwat's shoe they would be making lot more sensible comments, looking at Indian womens interest more senstively and in general making people more appreciative about who was leading India's largest party. That is an assumption of course but it is built on what I know about Jaitley and Shourey and Bhagwat.

Again, I was only doubting the electoral impact of a statement made 14 months before the general election by a relatively non-political figure. To turn your above post on its head, if Sushma Swaraj or Arun Jaitley had made such a statement in today's atmosphere, then perhaps there could have been a more substantial damage to the BJP's prospects.

Also this is a cause which caused lots of emotions among Indian youngsters so dont know about the impact part

Well, the statement was apparently distorted by the media. He was mocking the western contract model of marriage. Of course, RSS would do itself a favor and shut up for now. As far as the impact goes there may be some of it (I doubt it very much), but someone like Narendra Modi could totally nullify whatever little of it - considering the support he has from urban class (I am going by opinion polls here).

I have no time for these BJP/RSS 'sacred-vaadi' types. Society is not built on hypothetical notions of sacredness spouting off of some tales and stories of Gods, avatars and such. Society *IS* built on a social contract, on how the society defines such a contract. I have a big problem with the RSS type fundamentalists- for thats what they are- fundamentalists who hold on to an artificial concept of social behaviour, sprung from their unprovable and unsubstantiated legendary gods and goddesses (or the one God, that is even more moronic an idea IMO) and wish to implement it in society. There is little, if any core difference between the RSS types or the muslim/christian brigades. They are basically the old-fogey heirarchy hell-bent on keeping society static, by overglorifying our ancestors, who though quite advanced for their times, still only barely knew how to read & write on average and knew 1/1000th of phenomenal existence than the average grade 12-ever does today as some mistaken ideal to forever behold and not let go, for their power depends on keeping their interpretations of the old, narrow, 'jambhudvwipa' India of 2000 years ago as some sort of an ideal. Egoistic cowards is ultimately what they are.

Higher population will result higher number of cases' date=' but doesn't mean that much higher number can't be called far greater.[/quote'] That is because new media reports a thousand percent more cases of every crime type in India today than 20 years ago. 20 years ago, i had just left India. Trust me, from rape to the local farmer shooting the elephant to the dacoit rampage, ALL kinds of news was 1000 times less in India than it is today or the last 10 years. So don't correlate massively higher number of reported stuff in media today as a direct indicator of rise, we didn't have quality tracking of such things in the first place.

NEW DELHI: Spiritual guru Asaram Bapu has landed himself in a controversy over his remark that the December 16 Delhi gang-rape victim is as guilty as those responsible for the barbaric sexual assault on her. "Only 5-6 people are not the culprits. The victim is as guilty as her rapists... She should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop... This could have saved her dignity and life. Can one hand clap? I don't think so," Media reports quoted Asaram Bapu, as saying. According to media reports, the self-proclaimed godman further said that he is against harsher punishments for the accused as the law could be misutilised. "We have often seen such laws are made to be misutilised... Dowry harassment law is the biggest example," he said. The spiritual guru's remark comes at a time when the entire nation is mourning the death of the 23-year-old brave heart who died in a Singapore hospital 13 days later after the heinous crime.

Men can't fathom what rape is. Be it is Gandhi or some random Guruji. It is an ultimate gruesome experience for women to go through. It is so easy to sit in a peaceful ashram and say how she should have reacted. There is no way a man can put himself in such a situation and empathize with the victim. It is better they stop talking about how the girl should have behaved that too right after her demise.

Man I had never heard anyone, aside from the Pundit-ji, ever speak of Jambudvipa. Definitely not on a forum :hysterical:

Rape stats in Rural areas will always be reported less than the actual figures. It's the same everywhere. They are usually less educated/ have less access to law enforcement. There is some stigma attached in many cultures as well.
