He has said later that he had thoughts of retiring after WC win but he thought world cup win was a joyful moment for the whole nation and he didn't want to make it his own personal moment by retiring at that point of time so he delayed it.

No he did not. He had enough chances to retire gracefully but selfishness for needless records and need to stay in team to compete in IPL got the better of his judgement. I think the selectors told him that he won't chosen in one days side as it would have made the situation uncomfortable for BCCI and he had no option but to declare his retirement after being dropped behind closed doors!

Truly great people recognize the magnitude of an occasion. Its a shame but shows that he did not want a big farewell he is not that kind of player and what rubbish about him staying on for more advertising, he has more money than he can ever spend! He carried on as he was still playing well and team needed/needs him. Dravid or Laxman werent concerned about a send off either, people clapping and patting you on the back for an extra 10min these guys dont need. Tendulkar will however get a big one when he retires from tests.

And we should accept that argument just because Sachin said it? Imran won the 92 WC and retired, not sure if it took the focus away from the WC win. Mcgrath too retired after the 2007 WC win, how selfish and it took the attention away from the team effort. If the focus was so much on not diluting the WC win, wouldn't the best thing have been to opt out of the IPL which started 4-5 days after the WC final?

I find your post most shocking Chandan. The BCCI had hinted that the selectors were talking to him of his plans. The BCCI is keeping it under wraps to avoid more controversies is all. And are you guys so sure he 'retired' on his own and wasn't 'pushed' behind closed doors with media calls and fan pressure increasing to make him retire? That he isn't on notice for one last test series inside? Just because they don't make it public to avoid a media circus doesn't mean he wasn't pushed! No one can doubt his selfishness when he skipped national duty in WI when he should have rested in IPL. Or the way he got that 100th ton and sacrificed team interest losing us the match against Bangladesh and a chance at Asia Cup finals when quick runs were the need of the hour and not a slow hundred. No one can doubt the reasons for the same. Why did he not declare his one day retirement earlier and hastily did it only after a disaster at home increased calls for his head and after he failed 6 consecutive home tests to even make himself count? It was clear he was never going to make the one day series after Pak if he played. The selectors would have given him only that one shot amidst calls to replace aging players with youngsters for England one dayers. But another failure here would have cost him a shot at playing 200 tests - a better personal milestone. So he smartly ducked the issue and spun it by retiring from one dayers. We need to be like Aus fans be more dispassionate when it comes to idols with feet of clay! And why would a WC win be overshadowed by his 'retirement' back then? In fact when the Indian team carried him on their shoulders after the final ended, most in the dressing room too were probably expecting him to retire form one dayers on a high! How can a celebration be muted by celebrating the end of a glorious career? What tripe? What stopped him retiring 5-6 months later when the WC thing was behind? Wasn't Dhoni's rotation policy and his open media conference controversy of openers in Aus one dayers an indication of how much his presence was disrupting the side's balance as he was at the end of his career? That patience for him to decide once and for all was running thin? All these months he was hanging on saying he was enjoying the game despite failure after failure and he retires from short format only after everybody is calling for his head. I don't call it lapse of judgement. He is too shrewd a man for that. Too knowledgeable. I would call it running out of rope to hang onto further! Does he think people are fools who will buy this tripe thought up in hindsight? No record or player is greater than the game. The next test series, selectors should get tough and offer him a farewell test and if he disagrees drop him altogether and retire him involuntarily! Younger careers waiting for their chance in the side can't be sacrificed further till he sees sense. I can respect the way Gavaskar retired form his career when still in supreme form when people were asking him why he retired at least 2 years earlier.
