[/quote'] The idea behind sending a nightwatchman is to avoid your better batsman getting out to a freakish delivery or lapse of concentration in the last few minutes. Personally, I am not a big fan of the strategy because it tends to slow down the game the following day. However, for a batsman who uses the strategy the same freakish delivery and lapse of concentration can happen even in galli cricket, so the level of competition to determine sending in a nightwatchman is largely irrelevant. By the way, this attack is certainly better than what Bangladesh and Zimbabwe field so is sending a nightwatchman against them fine just because it's "international cricket"?

[/quote'] Two different standards of cricket altogether. In a test against a good bowling attack, you can understand when 2 wickets are down early and bowlers are on fire, but in a domestic match against an average bowling attack on a flat rack. Nightwatchman should not become a tradition or necessity but just a requirement of different situations while this was not that kind of a situation.

You are talking as if all other options are perfect Bradman's. I've not got a particular point here, but star of that series with the bat was Dinesh Karthik who played the new ball admirably. Akhtar unfortunately finished him off as an opener though.

Even sending Tare ahead of Rahane when Tare had kept wicket for 1 and a half days was a brain dead decision. He was sent to see of the new ball I think its stupid to assume that Sachin asked for a nighwatchman. Mumbai have been sending night watchmen all through the ranji season. Tare especially has floated around the batting order.

I don't like the idea of sending a nightwatchman generally. The freakish delivery or lapse of concentration that you have mentioned can happen at any time of the day. I find that it shows a certain lack of aggression. If the condition is tough for a short period during the middle of the day, like a cloud cover which is supposed to last for a short time, do we send a day-watchman ? It is my personal opinion that a nightwatchman should be sent only if it is uaturally dark or the match is really really important AND the attack is top class.

There is enough in the pitch for seamers. Also, on day 1 it had a decent covering of live grass, even today some of that grass was there. Will start turning from later tomorrow and on day 4 and 5 should be a turner.

But, apart from that , he has not had any extra pace, rarely bounced the ball extra and movement has been minimal. We should not be too critical of the youngster based on one match only, maybe he was a bit nevous, maybe it wad the pitch, but he has not looked special today atleast. Also, the pitch still has some live grass and has lookef dead mainly due to the quality of bowling.
