Good number of ppl reckon that Gambhir's innings was better and more crucial for India in that final. Splitting hairs? IDK what purpose it serves rather than stoking a personal preference debate. IIRC, It's not just me who disagrees but ex-cricket players who chose to award the MOM award. Of course, since this does not suit your opinion the views of ex-cricket players will not matter.

A world cup is won by winning most of the league matches and then winning the quarter finals, semi-finals and then the finals. If you falter at any stage, you dont win the cup, simple at that. You bring the 2003 example, but 2003 was one of our best performances. Of course you completely ignore the 1999, 2007 cups for your convinience where we failed to reach the knowckout stage which is exactly what would have happened in 2011 too if other players had not stepped up This is like watching a relay race and then praising only the 4th runner, completely ingoring the other 3

To say it was one of the most defining moments in Cricket, let alone Indian cricket, would be understatement. At the biggest stage on world cricket, playing at home, side in spot of bother, tough track, the captain comes ahead to two of the batters to take his team across the line. Chasing 273 in that pressure situation is truly remarkable stuff. Yes, Dhoni would be considered a great great achiever in Indian context given his success till WC 2011. But unfortunately thats where the story ends. What follows is a nightmare of unparalleled proportions even by standards of Indian cricket. But of course, not poor Dhoni's fault. There is LOT to admire in him. But lets see things for what they are.

Can you be sure others would have won from it specially considering we have lost such matches in the past from similar situations? 3. Do you agree that a group of ex-cricketers awarded the MoM to MS Dhoni and their opinion is certainly of much high value than us? No one denies the value of Gambhir's innings - it is just "how much" is what under discussion. Dhoni's innings is unanimously considered "slightly better" (stress on these two words) than Gambhir's due to the pace and sheer calculation by taking on the best bowlers of the opposition literally out of equation. The MoM award is testimony to that fact.

BeautifulGame Posted May 2, 2013 Author Posted May 2, 2013 Dhoni's was the best knock at a far superior SR to Gambhir.Upped the SR when Gambhir was stuggling to keep of the pressure and carried India after Gambhir once again typically choked. Its hilarious how some are trying to downplay Dhoni's knock in the final :cantstop: At the end of 30th over the Req Run Rate was well above 6 an over with us still needing 125 runs. After that Gambhir scored 21 from 28 balls and Dhoni scored 79 from 58 balls. Obviously the match was already won when Dhoni came into bat :hysterical:

Only on ICF you will hear arguments like: How come finals performance matters more when you need to win the semis first? Isn't it like being the anchor of a relay? LOL #1 How come finishing the game is that important given that we had several other potential finishers still to come? LOL #2 How come the MoM is really the MoM and not the 3rd worst performer from the last? LOL #3
maniac Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 If 21st century began in 2000....If Jordan is the benchmark of the greatest-then Dhoni is pretty low rung on the list-Might make it to the top 25-50 since 2000 but that's about it.May be in ODI's he will make it to the Top 10 but neither in Test nor T20. Anyways Simon Hughes analysis is no more relevant than a fan boy bost on ICF..so will take it with a pinch of salt
