maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 This is a topic always up for debate. I have seen fans (including me) either writing off a bowler completely or Praising him to the moon based on his spell in an IPL game . But here is the deal...In this form of cricket I have seen the best bowlers in the world being taken for 20+ run overs but here is the difference... Last year I saw AB literally destroying Steyn and snatching the game away from DC but no one writes off Steyn based on that(This is a IPL section so let us not go into Steyn's other accomplishments for a moment here). The reason why things like that may be over looked was in this case the batsman was brilliant,he was hitting yorkers and pacy full length-deliveries.I have seen some other instances too where boelwers were literally destroyed by a batsman on a rampage or a flat pitch- bowlers graveyards and nothing much they could do. Which brings to my point.... Guys like Dinda,RP and some spells of Pandey and Kulkarni were :banghead: worthy because they were leaking runs due to their own stupidity.....Full-tossess,Giving away free-hits,Uneccessary extras etc when the pressure was on is a mark of a poor bowler. Mohit Sharma,Bhuvan and to some extent Yadav have been impressive because even in their worst overs, they didn't give away freebies, batsman had to work for it or was just unstoppable at that time.I even sympathise with V.K here who has done well because he stuck to his guns.
maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 Oops hit the submit button incomplete....so continuing...is it fair enough to judge how good a bowler would be based not on his final economy rate but by watching his complete spell and judging him.....also the overall point would be will IPL atleast give us a glimpse as to how good this bowler would be in internationals-be it tests,ODI or T20
flamy Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 I've been out of the loop for a while. How is Sreesanth doing? I know Ishant has regressed. I had hopes on the fella *sigh* BK is a pleasant surprise (first time I'm seeing him)
kubrickian Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 It will be too harsh to judge a bowler based on T20 because the nature of the format is against bowlers. There are only 20 overs, pitches are very good for batting, boundaries are small, outfields are fast and batsmen just go for big shots from the get go. Having said that, you can definitely find good aspects of certain bowlers like the pace which they generate, their bowling action, seam position of the ball and if they are able to get some movement or if they get some turn, their variations and how they bowl to good batsmen under pressure. Among the Indian bowlers, B Kumar, Mohit Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Vinay Kumar, Mishra have done well so far. Dhawal Kulkarni, Sreesanth, Karan Sharma, Unadkat, RP Singh, Ishant Sharma, Rahul Shukla have had a mixed tournament where they bowled superbly in some games and looked ordinary in others.
maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 I've been out of the loop for a while. How is Sreesanth doing? I know Ishant has regressed. I had hopes on the fella *sigh* BK is a pleasant surprise (first time I'm seeing him) Sree and Ishant have been doing what they do best....bring your hopes up and then crash land them.but Sree has been marginally better though
maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 T20 bowling performances should never be analysed and extrapolated for the longest form is what I believe. The skill sets required are so different' date=' like two separate sports. In T20 you'll have fast bowlers looking to bowl as wide as possible when the batsman is backing away on the leg. This doesn't happen in tests. So on and so forth.[/quote'] Yeah but you can tell if a bowler is garbage or not when he bowls 6 full tosses or over-steps on the last ball of the match-------things you don't do even in Gully cricket
vvvslaxman Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Also fielding has to support the bowlers. PKXI have decent bowling. But their fielding consistently let them down.
kubrickian Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 Yeah but you can tell if a bowler is garbage or not when he bowls 6 full tosses or over-steps on the last ball of the match-------things you don't do even in Gully cricket There's also pressure of the situation and having to do well for your team and having to deal with 40,000 people in the stadium making lots of noise and millions of people watching at home. Some people tend to make mistakes which they otherwise wouldnt.
maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 You cannot. T20 demands variations from bowlers unless you're Steyn. It's natural that bowlers will lose the plot more often going for those variations. In tests they need discipline first and foremost. Very different requirements. Ok Tell me....How bad of a bowler you must be if you overstep on the last ball of the match?Hell even if that ball was a length ball and hit for a 6 that wouldn't have been half as bad as that-That clearly tells you the bowler is garbage. When some one hits you for a couple of 6's....You might bowl a wide in the process of trying a yorker, you don't over step to give the batsman a free hit. You bowl 1 or 2 full tossess in an entire spell fine excusable...but bowling full 2 tossess in a 4 over spell over multiple games.....yes the bowler is considered garbage. As I said 2-3 bad overs can be over looked but you can be called garbage if you don't correct yourself after multiple games. These are basic principles...1-2 mistakes are excusable but when a bowler does it again and again, then he just doesn't have the brains to play international cricket because whatever the format is,this might be as close as it comes to international cricket in a domestic setting.
maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 There's also pressure of the situation and having to do well for your team and having to deal with 40' date='000 people in the stadium making lots of noise and millions of people watching at home. Some people tend to make mistakes which they otherwise wouldnt.[/quote'] So Tell me,If a bowler cannot handle pressure in IPL....He will automatically be a different beast in international cricket?
maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 Also batsman or bowler...apart from the exceptions of 1-2...the top IPL performers are more often than not proven performers at the international level
kubrickian Posted April 30, 2013 Posted April 30, 2013 So Tell me' date='If a bowler cannot handle pressure in IPL....He will automatically be a different beast in international cricket?[/quote'] Not saying he will be different necessarily. But there are lots of instances where experienced bowlers have lost it when they played for international cricket as well. They are human and pressure can get to them sometimes.
maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 Not saying he will be different necessarily. But there are lots of instances where experienced bowlers have lost it when they played for international cricket as well. They are human and pressure can get to them sometimes. Yes they have as I mentioned I have seen Steyn and Murali taken apart....Infact VK and Bhuvan have had some expensive overs too but You can clearly see the difference in their off days and some of the other bowlers who we discussed as su****ng Not arguing with you....just saying that IPL may give us a glimpse of what the bowler is made of
maniac Posted April 30, 2013 Author Posted April 30, 2013 Sorry, I disagree. Bowling no balls does not imply the bowler is garbage. Morkel and I believe even Philander would be garbage by your standards. There are no last balls in test, so once again your extrapolation doesn't hold. By all means call a bowler garbage in T20s if he bowls garbage in that format. But has no bearing on his game as a long form bowler. There is something called temparament....Of course batsman are not playing the Dilscoop or Helicopter shots in Test Cricket but a good bowler quickly learns from his mistakes Handles himself well under pressure regardless of the format. Look at Dinda for example, not a single person on this forum says-let us forgive his IPL perofmrance because the guy repeatedly makes the same mistakes....Even if he had a sterling domestic season prior to this I wouldn't pick him and seriously question his ability to play the game at the highest standard. Once again I completely don't disagree with your point...I am saying that all IPL performances cannot be overlooked.
rkt.india Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 FYI, Dinda had a poor FC season prior to IPL. He was decent last IPL before he got injured was best Indian bowler at death because he could bowl yorkers but he has lost it this season. He has always been a poor bowler with new ball. He is down on pace too.
I6MTW Posted May 1, 2013 Posted May 1, 2013 Personally, I find Steyn overrated in limited overs. He's not the best and he can be played out and sometimes even scored off.
