If you havent forgotten Dhoni has performed better in domestic then intl. He's a better domestic than intl player. Just check his IPL records. And that match where India was 29-5, that was a massive pace friendly pitch with swing and seam.

And the only reason he didn't come in early was because the score was not 29-5 and it would have been too easy for him. So to give Mumbai a decent chance, he waited till 5 wickets had already fallen and came in at 34-5

Dhoni brought him to counter pace and he got out to spin. Ashwin scored international fifties at a regular basis. He started his career as an opening batsmen.

Personally not a bad move. Dhoni is not a technical wizard . He has his short comings. But he has some strengths that is unmatched by his peers. Death over slogging against anyone.
