Next time he plays against bounce, watch carefully. Don't go by our impression of him a year back. He has improved a lot. Still has some weakness but nothing glaring.

Weaving and ducking is the right indicator dealing with short ball. You cannot possibly hook or pull or uppercut every single short ball bowled at you. You only increase the chance of getting out. From that perspective Raina is the poorest. He doesn't know how to weave or duck. Vijay weaves well but ducks poorly. He turns and shows the shoulder to the rising ball. Dhoni rarely ducks but weaves at times. Pujara compulsive puller. His first intent is to play it. Ashwin is also the same. Kohli mostly tries to take it on than letting it go past him. Karthik is probably the only guy who ducks and weaves well. One of the reason he is good in swinging conditions is because he stands a feet outside the crease to counter the swing. Even if the bowler bowls a short one he backs himself to duck or weave something others don't do. I want our batsmen to duck and weave than taking on the short ball .

express bowling Posted July 7, 2013 Posted July 7, 2013 When a batsman can decide whether to attack, defend or leave the short ball and is capable of doing all of these then he is an excellent player of the short ball. The ability and tendency to leave deliveries is imperative to effectively playing the short ball. It is not possible to attack all short deliveries. That being said, effectively attacking short balls, especially when good bouncy bowlers are bowling, helps wrest psychological control from the opponent. So, having batsmen who can leave as well as attack short deliveries would be great.

As long as it works.. Taking it on the body worked for Waugh. If he were an Indian he would have been pilloried by our fans. A poor player against short ball. But he never backed away.

Exactly but you have to take it on in ODIs and T20s. For me Pujara is not good against short ball. Compulsiveness is a huge weakness which quick bowlers can easily exploit.

The problem is that not many remember Sehwag pre 2007 against the short ball. Here's one example - let me know if you need more. England exploited it superbly with balls that rose sharply just outside off stump and, today, Fidel Edwards exploited the same weakness but in a different manner.
