Did it surprise you how well they played short deliveries ?

This has been a big problem with some of our batsmen in foreign conditions. There were some exceptions like Sachin, Sehwag and Dravid but others generally used to struggle against any delivery which was around shoulder level. Batsmen like Gambhir, Raina never gave me confidence while playing bouncers. Now that two bouncers are allowed per over in ODIs, it becomes more important not just to leave the bouncer but also to score runs off it. But batsmen like Dhawan, Rohit, Kohli, Kartik, Dhoni and even Jadeja seem to feast on short deliveries and enjoy playing them. Remember first game against SA where their bowlers basically bowled a short length throughout. But Indian batsmen were well up to the task and took them to the cleaners. In fact, I think this is one of the big reasons for success in this tournament. Glad to see this change in Indian batting.

Not really. No batsman in the world is really comfortable when ball comes on to the body. Its a question of either keeping the ball down to the ground or back yourself to play a big shot or just leaving it. He wouldnt have scored 2 centuries back to back against SA and WI who were basically bowling a lot of short stuff to Indian batsmen if he didnt have the technique.

no others had time n played in comfortably.he was rushed. was out that way v Aus,got dropped v WI and got off v SA due to Morkel being too in. not a huge problem as Raina,but something to work on imo

What I felt was he was playing a lofted shot off the ball pitched against his body instead of keeping it on the ground which got him into trouble a couple of times. But other times, I thought he managed quite well.

pitches to be fair were not out and out seamers. There was bounce but it was manageable. What sides tend to do against india is bang it in short all the time. It was a poor tactic more than anything.

There was good bounce in all pitches, much more than in India where ball doesnt bounce more than knee high. What was lacking early on is swing and seam movement but there was some of that in games against Sri Lanka and some in final too.

That 6 by Kohli was simply awesome. He came down the track and Barbie dug it short. It was not a slow bouncer. It was fast and aimed at his head. How well he puled it !!!! That shot was one of the best I saw from yesterday's match highlights.

Naresh, I dont think the short deliveries problem is solved or even solved 50%. It is still there. Very few legendary Indian batsmen have done alright with the short ball directed at your body. We will have to see what happens with our next gen (incl. Dhawan, Kohli, Pujara, Jadeja...) in the South Africa series. That will be a real test. Lets revisit this thread after SA series, and we will know more then.

As long as players know how to avoid short deliveries we are good. From what i have seen Dhawan avoids well. Pujara is still a compulsive puller. Kohli is also. Raina is the only one who doesn't even know how to avoid it.
