sachin has played against some of the greatest bowlers the world have ever seen..to maintain an average of 44+ against bowlers like akram, mcgrath, akhtar, waqar, walsh, ambrose, lee, shane bond, steyn, morkel , pollock and don't forget he had to face them when the ball was new....bowlers of these days barring steyn, morkel and malinga are nowhere close to them.......and then look out his strike rate- 86.23 and then dhoni's - 88.18, hardly any difference, and to maintain this avg and strike rate against those bowlers for 23 years...you need to have godly powers...he is indeed the greatest ever, only may be comparable to viv richards

On what basis?....If you are picking an alltime Indian XI for ODI than both SRT and Dhoni will make it into the team hands down.... .If it is an alltime World X1 for ODI....Dhoni will always be behind Gilchrist where as SRT will be a shoo -in in the opening slot
it doesnt prove SRT is >> MSD both are competing for the different slots and MSD would make it to all time XI in the lower middle order

On the other hand Dhoni has to be the greatest ODI captain ever (sorry clive loyd, ricky ponting), but to win w/c, vb series and champions trophy with a bowling attack which is not clearly in top 5, you need a man of special calibre. And he back his captainship with fantastic batting display in death and smart wicket keeping...one thing to notice that he have to play almost a t20 type innings every time in the death and yet he able to maintain an avg of 51+ !!! :hatsoff: that is where he is stand out.. And not to forget he is master of close matches, the number of close he won it for us when we are nearly down and out is just incredible :hatsoff: ..No other captains can boast of such feats..... Dhoni - captainship+batting+ wk = best captain ever BUT AS CRICKETER STILL SACHIN IS INCH AHEAD FROM DHONI :winky:

I disagree, I think Sehwag and Gayle are/were clearly better than Gilly as a fast scoring opener and i also rate Anwar ahead of him.
Gilchrist played most of his cricket on pitches more tricky for openers than Sehwag on average and has a similar career return. Gayle is a much slower player than Gilchrist and Anwar is not even in the same ballpark as an attacking opener to merit a comparison with Sehwag, Gilchrist, Gayle, and Jayasuriya. He is more in the group of M Waugh, Tendulkar, Hayden kind of openers - attacking, quick, and consistent but not destructive.
The group of openers who are fast & attacking openers is far deeper than the group of finishers.
No, it's not. Openers with a 35+ average and a 90+ strike rate are very rare and can be counted with your fingers.
yes, Hussey & Symonds are part of that club but they simply didnt/havnt done it for long enough compared to Jonty,Bevan and Dhoni.
Huh? Hussey and Symonds played nearly 200 ODIs each. How is that not long enough when Dhoni, Rhodes, and Bevan all played less than 250 ODIs.
but Gilly and dhoni are definitely comparable in the limited overs format.
Comparable, yes in the sense that both would easily make the top 5 of destructive openers and finishers respectively, but while Gichrist is the runaway winner of his group, Dhoni is not.

Sorry I disagree that : a) Gilly played on tougher pitches ( Aussie pitches are either way, way flatter than Indian pitches or slightly more bouncier) b) Runaway winner in the group. I'd definitely take Sehwag over him and Gayle still qualifies as a destructive opener by the virtue of him being the primier destructive batsman when on song. c) The role of Gillchrist is easier to fulfill- I will still take Sehwag over him and certainly, the value of a high scoring finisher with higher strike rates than his contemporaries is far greater value than an opener who on average scores an extra 5-10 runs per 100 balls.

ganguly, yuvi and sachin>>>>msd in icc odi events.. yuvi mott 2011 wc,sachin mott 2003 wc,ganguly has 7 centuries in icc odi event. those who are picking yuvi over ganguly are missing the point that there were no powerplay, bpp in ganguly`s era, ganguly played most odis in the late 90`s and early 2000`s where odi game was completely different to what it is now or after advent of t20s.. ganguly`s s/r of 74 was very acceptable during that era bcoz he was an opener and his main job was to see of the new ball and provide a steady start particularly when sachin played with a good strike rate.. bowling wise both are similar, fielding wise yuvi far better ,captaincy-we all know.. one must understand the semantics of odi played from 96-2002,anyone who watched cricket of that era would know ganguly was a gun player in odis ,was 4th quickest i think to reach 5k runs and amassed 22 tons in just 230 odd odis!!!!

"some people" rate only 2011 world cup final as the big match rest are just lolipop games in cricket :winky:
The team literally carried him till Finals. His contribution in the world cup would have been on par with Sreesanth's if we had got knocked out early. Even Nehra and Munaf had better contribution. Finals knock was good but we were 118/3 when he came with Yuvraj and Raina yet to come not as if he came turned it around. I give him credit for the way he finished though, we probably would have slipped in the last 5 overs if Yuvi-MSD weren't there.

The question here is - How do we measure a player X contribution towards a team? This particularly when we have no access to a lot of things which happen behind the scenes. IDK if we can do that but surely MS Dhoni has to be in the Top 5 ODI cricketers India has produced.
He is second best after SRT.

If we're talking keepers then Gilly is the best keeper/batsman in ODIs ever. Its not even up for debate. Dhoni can only compete for 2nd spot in the best keeper/batsman category.
Will take Dhoni ahead of Gilly anyday in ODIs to bat at 6.
