Ponting vs Dhoni-Who is the better captain

Have your own interpretation of this debate,Statistically or Strategy wise who is better... I mean Dhoni's accomplishments keep popping up all the time but Ponting definitely is leagues ahead-I mean total test dominance and 2 back to back worldcups. Both have led from the front on many occasions with Ponting clearly being the better player across all formats. Now the arguments made for Dhoni usually are that he has had a weak bowling attack where as Ponting had legends amidst his ranks and Dhoni has accomplished across 3 formats against Pontings 2 ,etc There is always a talk of Dhoni having some established sr players who were brilliant match winners in their own right in his team. I mean the reason for this thread is there are some parallels between Ponting and Dhoni's success as captains.... So without brinigng up the usual suspects in these debates like Ganguly,Lloyd,Waugh,Taylor,Hussain, Imran and Arjuna Who do you rate as the better captain?

I would say ignoring Statistics....I will go with Dhoni because he does innovate from time time to time against Pontings more formulaic approach but again I don't rate Dhoni's captaincy very highly overall either.

Pointing by miles. He is one of the best all time captain.
Tactically he was not that good. Once the old guards were gone his captaincy didn't look great. Most of the times he captain an Australian side that was already battle hardened and ready to go. They were already bullying all the teams. Stephen Fleming was tactically a better captain in his era. Sadly he was not blessed with world class talents.

So having said that do you rate Dhoni over Ponting?

Dhoni is not tactically great either. More instinctive though. He did out-captain Punter in Indian series where he set a 1-8 field and they fell prey to it. Same way Punter made a gross mistake of using part timers to meet over-rate requirement. Overall both have made msitakes, made okay decisions. But if you are purely talking about being a "Leader" not merely a "captain" Dhoni scores it. Pressure of leading an Aussie side is nowhere close to pressure of leading an Indian side. All you have to do is ignore Malcom Conn in Australia. In India. from Goswamy to Guruswamy everyone will be after your ass.

check out the ICC CT team with which ponting won in SA and also the test series win in SA. It was with rookies. I believe Ponting does not get recognition because pre 2008, Aus were invincible. Depends how you judge a captain too. I mostly go by victories. that is why Dhonis names crops up ahead of Ganguly

guys lets not forget that ishant sharma has come up with 2 world class spells the one against ponting years ago and the 2 ball spell against samuels:hail:

See what Ponting did when legends were gone and then see what Dhoni is doing. Dhoni won the CT with team full of youngsters. His tests record since retirement of our big guns reads 7-2 and we would get a better idea if and when Sachin retires.

2009 CT - Watson, Paine, White, Hopes, Fergusson, Hauritz, Jhonson, Siddle - three experienced players in Ponting, Hussey and Lee.

2009 CT - Watson' date=' Paine, White, Hopes, Fergusson, Hauritz, Jhonson, Siddle - three experienced players in Ponting, Hussey and Lee.[/quote'] Watson and Johnson weren't exactly in the same league as Paine, Hopes etc. He still had Hussey and Lee with him as you mentioned. With Dhoni, second most experienced was Raina who is just 26 having played 160 odd ODIs.

Ponting had the likes of Warne McGill Gillespie MrGrath Lee who were good bowlers who set their own fields many times without any input from the captain Dhoni has Ishant and Umesh currently and a plethora of pie chuckers who will followed them. More than Ponting or Dhoni. Flemming of nz is one captain i admired the most
