littlemaster1982 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 ^^ desert storm.. McGrath didn't play in that series.
Laaloo Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Read somewhere that India with Sachin in the side could not win an ODI series or ODI tournament vs Aus with Mcgrath playing! Will have to check if its true. Well I guess that ends the discussion. McGrath owned Sachin. Accept it and move on :phehehe:
vamos_rafa Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Yes. Correct. Tendulkar was out as the 6th wicket to Gillespie. He had taken McGrath's 4th over to 14 runs but slowed down later as wickets started falling at other end. Correct. He looked set for a good innings, but ran out of partners and eventually got out. I clearly remember how he got out. Walked across the stumps to a gillespie slower one and got lbw.
Jersey #10 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 McGrath, tell us something we already don't know. It's a well written fact that Sachin is the greatest sports person to have stepped on this planet.
saneindian Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 ^^ desert storm.. Mcgrath didn't play in that series. Fleming, Gillespie, kasper and Warne was the bowling attack.

Will have to check if its true. Mcgrath only played the 2001 ODI series (apart from 96 WC) in India. So that stat is a bit misleading. During Mcgrath's time we hardly had the to compete let alone beat Aussies in Australia .Hardly Sachin's fault.

We beat them with anil kumble and srinath hitting him for fours and sixers. I remember kumble's mother was in the stands for the match. It was titan cup. http://www.rediff.com/sports/1996/oct21a.htm iKxRo5qgfmY

Deleted_User_1 Posted August 2, 2013 Author Posted August 2, 2013 McGrath didn't play in that series. Yep, if McGrath played in that series, there would not be any desert storm, just desert heat....Sachin would have been owned...... :giggle:
FischerTal Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Yep' date=' if McGrath played in that series, there would not be any desert storm, just desert heat....Sachin would have been owned...... :giggle:[/quote'] like how Lillee used to own gavaskar? :giggle:
Raghav_12 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Here is the video of that game he was referring too.. xQu9YmUgTV0 wow.. i don't recall myself seeing that Sachin pulling McGrath to a huge six. This should be in one of the great sixes of Sachin.. almost as good as Sachin pulling Caddick to six in WC 2003. Both occassions he picked length early that he seemed to waiting for those balls like a punctual man waiting for bus by reaching 10 mins in advance. Watch between 0.42 to 0.47. Sachin having a go at McGrath. Never saw something like that. Gold.
Raghav_12 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 In Test Matches I would say it was advantage Sachin. They played 4 test series against each other. In 96 India - 1 test series. Sachin Got out to 10 and 0 in that Test match. Can't say much with 1 test series. In 99/00 - 3 test series. Sachin managed to score @46.33 despite some of the atrocious decisions. Dubious decisions in 3 out of 6 innings. McGrath couldn't stop Sachin from scoring those runs. Sachin also had zero support from other players of Indian team. McGrath was at peak of his powers, so was Sachin. Advantage Sachin. In 2000/01 series in India - 3 test series. Sachin managed to score @ 50.66. Both were fully fit and around best time in their careers. Advantage Sachin In 2004/05 - Sachin was in bad shape, struggling with injuries and woefully out of form. Played just 2 of the test matches. Yet scored a match-wining 55 in mumbai test match. So, if anyone had advantage in this tussle in test matches, it was Sachin.
adi B Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 mcgrath was 34 in 2004 series,in 2001 series mcgrath did well
Raghav_12 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 mcgrath was 34 in 2004 series' date='in 2001 series mcgrath did well[/quote'] Agreed that McGrath did very well on 2001 series. But McGrath had all chances to stop Sachin from scoring those many runs. Sachin couldn't have done anything to stop McGrath from taking other's wickets. In 2004, mcGrath took 14 @25. Not bad.

Also if you are using Sachin's average , do look a Mcgrath's average in those series. 96 - 1 wicket@43 99-00 - 18 wickets@14 01 - 17 wickes@15 04- 14 wickets@25 If Sachin's bating average in those series indicates he had an edge, wonder what Mcgrath's stats suggest. Finally in tests against each other, Sachin 9 tests, 662 runs @37 - 17 points lower than his career average Mcgrath 9 tests, 45 wickets @17 - 4 points lower than his career average Conclusive stats on who had an edge
The Outsider Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Tendulkar scored 88 head to head test runs against McGrath between 1999 and 2007, being dismissed 5 times for an average of 17.6. It's a joke to suggest that Tendulkar held the edge over McGrath or even had an equal measure. What he did well was play out McGrath and score against the rest of the attack. http://www.sportstats.com.au/blogmay2007mar2008.html Table 4. Prominent batsmen who failed against McGrath 1999-2007. Batsman Runs Out Avge G Kirsten 75 4 18.8 SR Tendulkar 88 5 17.6

Particularly in test matches. A batsman scoring a 100 is failure of all the bowlers of opposition team, including the one you considering for contest. But a bowler taking 5 wickets doesn't necessarily mean the failure of particular batsman. In your example only. Your numbers for 96 series (or test) make it look like a failure of McGrath in contest of Sachin vs McGrath. But guess what in that test match McGrath had bowled Sachin for a duck. So who had won that contest. On the other hand in 2001 series while McGrath were taking wickets @ 15, still he couldn't score Sachin from scoring @ 51. What does that mean? That means, though McGrath did very well in that series, but in duel between Sachin and McGrath, McGrath failed.
Raghav_12 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Tendulkar scored 88 head to head test runs against McGrath between 1999 and 2007' date= being dismissed 5 times for an average of 17.6. If a batsman scores @ 17 against a particlular bowler in a test match, that would mean, using very rough calculations and considering batsman would have faced 4 bowlers, that Batsman scored @68 runs which is a success for batsman. I am not saying that Sachin was a great success in test matches against McGrath but overall I would say Sachin held the edge. In ODI's, McGrath held a clear edge.
