saneindian Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 That is very wrong way to look at the contest between bowler and batsman. Particularly in test matches. A batsman scoring a 100 is failure of all the bowlers of opposition team, including the one you considering for contest. But a bowler taking 5 wickets doesn't necessarily mean the failure of particular batsman. In your example only. Your numbers for 96 series (or test) make it look like a failure of McGrath in contest of Sachin vs McGrath. But guess what in that test match McGrath had bowled Sachin for a duck. So who had won that contest. On the other hand in 2001 series while McGrath were taking wickets @ 15, still he couldn't score Sachin from scoring @ 51. What does that mean? That means, though McGrath did very well in that series, but in duel between Sachin and McGrath, McGrath failed. And guess what, that is exactly the same method you chose to prove Sachin had an edge over Mcgrath! As for the 2001 series, anyone who watched the series would know who won the Sachin vs Mcgrath duel. Less said abou the 2004 series the better. No shame in admitting that Sachin did not have a lot of success vs Mcgrath
The Outsider Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 This kind of stats are misleading. If a batsman scores @ 17 against a particlular bowler in a test match' date=' that would mean, using very rough calculations and considering batsman would have faced 4 bowlers, that Batsman scored @68 runs which is a success for batsman. I am not saying that Sachin was a great success in test matches against McGrath but overall I would say Sachin held the edge. In ODI's, McGrath held a clear edge.[/quote'] LOL! What???? Think about what you've written for some time and I am sure you'll realize it makes no sense. If you don't I'll explain the fallacy in your thought process in a day or two when I have more time.
Raghav_12 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 And guess what, that is exactly the same method you chose to prove Sachin had an edge over Mcgrath! No shame in admitting that Sachin did not have a lot of success vs Mcgrath Yes. I have no shame in admitting that McGrath held an edge over Sachin in ODI's. But in test matches I don' think if that is the case. Batsman is there is score runs and Bowler is there to take wickets. Match is won by the team which scores more runs not by who takes more wickets. If Sachin was able to score at around average of 50, to me it means that each bowler of opposite team kind of failed against Sachin, including McGrath. That doesn't necessarily mean that mcGrath failed in that series.
Deleted_User_1 Posted August 2, 2013 Author Posted August 2, 2013 Guys guys guys............in the battle between Sachin and Mcgrath, Mcgrath won BIG TIME! Next question please!!!! :giggle:
Raghav_12 Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Guys guys guys............in the battle between Sachin and Mcgrath' date=' [b']Mcgrath won BIG TIME! Next question please!!!! :giggle: who won between Lilllee and Gavaskar :P
Deleted_User_1 Posted August 2, 2013 Author Posted August 2, 2013 like how Lillee used to own gavaskar? :giggle: Gavaskar played against Lillee only one series in Aus when he was in horrible form. Sachin played Mcgrath many times in multiple series and ODIs and on most occasions Mcgrath won!!! Sachin :fail: :giggle:

Chalks Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I have no qualms about saying McGrath had the better of the duel with Sachin. But so he did with just about every top quality batsman during his era - frick he dismissed Atherton 19 times in tests! The same Atherton who once batted for 14 hours against Donald & co. I would say only KP could really got on top of him for any length of time, and he only came on the scene towards the end of McG's career.

Generally agree but i do feel that Lara had his fair share of success against McGrath.
Crookbond Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 wow.. i don't recall myself seeing that Sachin pulling McGrath to a huge six. This should be in one of the great sixes of Sachin.. almost as good as Sachin pulling Caddick to six in WC 2003. Both occassions he picked length early that he seemed to waiting for those balls like a punctual man waiting for bus by reaching 10 mins in advance. Watch between 0.42 to 0.47. Sachin having a go at McGrath. Never saw something like that. Gold. Watch 1st ODI - 2001 Bangalore. McGrath bowls, Tendulkar front foot defence. Ball rolls to McGrath who threatens to throw at Tendulkar. Sachin puts his left arm out and points over the square leg boundary signalling that I will hit you out of the ground. In that game, Tendulkar struck 3 boundaries in an over of different lengths to McGrath - he got him to alter his length. IMO, he was set for a 100 but VVS Laxman ran him out to which he screamed in anger at the crease.

McGrath pretty much had the edge (literally as well) over Tendulkar in Test matches. In fact, I would argue that it was in ODI's where we saw Tendulkar having a go against McGrath.

Lord Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 no one dominated Pigeon :bigboss: Laxman did well against him,but wont call it domination
ravishingravi Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 McGrath won some hyped up battles like WC99. Talking WC 2003 as battle between these 2 is unfair as Sachin was very much on backfoot by the time he went in to bat. Overall McGrath definitely had an edge but only slightly. In such battles bowler is likely to have an advntage over batsman. So, I would imagine Tendulkar won less hyped battles. Which were there battles ? Btw doesn't this further attest the notion that he bottles it on big stage. From what I have seen, Mcgrath was all over Tendulkar with few exceptions. He was being kind here.

Actually, SRT really tried hard to dominate him in ODIs on a few occasions even went verbal at times but was not really successful. I would say no really dominated McGrath.

Raghav_12 Posted August 3, 2013 Posted August 3, 2013 Never I said that Sachin dominated McGrath. In fact I agree with the fact that nobody ever dominated McGrath that why he is right there among the top fast bowlers of all time. I have issues the way people using stats to show that McGrath dominated Sachin. As I said earlier, a bowler can have 5 wickets even after not succeeding against a particular batsman but a batsman can't have a 100 without succeeding against all bowlers of the opposition. In ODI's these kind of stats make more sense when batsmen are also compelled to take initiative and if bowlers don't allow them then you can say they are successful. But not so in test matches.
