At least from a professional standpoint, If you want to make it up the corporate ladder in the West, you better be handsome guy or gal. If you have below average looks, you have NO chance in the West, especially because this is a society that judges its young and middle aged people almost solely on how many members of the opposite sex they can attract. India's population may be thrice that of of the United States, but i can guarantee there are at least twice the number of teenage girls in the US right now, standing in front of the mirror, not happy that at their figures as there is in India. If you really want to get a full sense of what I am talking about, just go and observe some high school picnic/excursion if you get a chance (dont act like a pervy weirdo, ok? ). Almost every guy/gal, dresses and acts like every other guy/gal. The sheer sameness in the way people dress, talk and act here is staggering. Here, everyone is obsessed with trying to match up to their respective cool stereotype that is represented in the movies. I would hate to be teenager growing up in the US.

It is an obsession in its own right here, people equate tanned with sexy and pale with sick/nerdy/not-sexy. It is very much the same type obsession, driven to absurd proportions. I don't think you have any idea of what you are talking about. Tanning business in US >> skin whitening in India. My take ? People should be free to choose what color they find sexy (skin color is not on top of my list of desirable physical attributes) , but equating darker skin color with inferiority (as is done in India) is absurd. Agree. This thing is everywhere.

People like fair skin color girls or boys and this applies for both normal boys and girls. You cannot force or changes their the likes. You can if people know something is wrong. I grew out of it once I realized and started finding even dusky complexion beautiful. There was a phase I wouldn't even look at someone with a dusky complexion

Dusky girls can be the most beautiful but I was talking about the general liking of people and that is not just about India but everywhere. This is not just a perception but has deep meaning and relates to things which are part of life. How many people like dark, night? Most likes morning, sunshine. Similar is the case with complexion. It is a psych which is not forced but is inbuilt inside us naturally. It is not like people don't like dusky girls or boys, they do but first thing that attracts the eyes is fair complexion.

So one can see the roots of this obsession of "fair" skin in Indian culture: remnants of a colonized past.
Debutant Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I don't what it is but I never find dark skinned girls attractive. This is purely my personal point of view. Fair skinned girls look much more attractive than dark skin girl to me.

Krishna, Ram, Vishnu, Shiva, Kali... all portrayed as of dark complexion. Varna as colour is disregarded in Mahabharat.
