coffee_rules Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/Pakistan-playing-like-India-of-90s-Salim-Malik/articleshow/22649611.cms "The sad part is that today our players are playing the same way that the Indian players played against us in the 80s and 90s," Malik said on 'Geo Super' channel. "I recall that in the '80s when we were winning against India we always felt that most of their players didn't play as a unit and were just interested in scoring 30 to 40 runs and securing their places for the next match. That is why they struggled against us," Malik claimed. Say, What?
CSK Fan Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 If you switch batting with bowling, it's a decent comparison
vvvslaxman Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 correction Pakistan playing like Pakistan from the 90s. Pakistan lost a home series to zimbabwe in the 90s.
saneindian Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Hope there are no Azhar, Jadeja, Mongia in the current Pak team and the team doctor is not like Dr. Irani.
Vijay.Sharma Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Anyone who watched Indo-Pak cricket in the 80s and 90s would know that Salim Malik has got things pretty right!
jalebi_bhai Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 To be fair......he is rather spot on with that comparison.......we were incredibly mediocre, bar Sachin, during the 90s......
vvvslaxman Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 We were poor. But we were slightly more competitive than this bunch. We would have never lost to a team like Zimbabwe of this era. This is downright pathetic side where Misba is the best batsman. That says a lot.
G_B_ Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 hmm its a proper comparison. Its hard to say about team India in the 90s. We were not great but i think in the limited overs match fixing might have contributed to a few losses and ruined the atmosphere. The highlights for India in the 90s - never defeated in a test series at home - reached the semi finals of the 1996 world cup - reached the finals and semis of the knockout cup which happened to be the tournament leading to the champions trophy The bleak moments - away record sucked ODIs and Tests. I think we lost to Zim away in test cricket, frequently blanked by Australia - 1992 world cup. Painful. I think the 90s India side can be described as, good at home and terrible outside. Sri lanka (who were minnows then) was the only away series win away from India.

This is downright pathetic side where Misba is the best batsman. That says a lot. Not Test matches......but we did lose a few ODIs to the likes of Kenya.......there definitely are parallels between the two........but it feels great that the shoe is on the other foot........:giggle:
G_B_ Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 In the case of Pakistan they have reached the semis of 2011 and 2012 limited overs tournaments and have recent white washed England. Problems for them are only emerging as no young players has come through and established himself. The rest of the decade might be an indicator for this.
vvvslaxman Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Not Test matches......but we did lose a few ODIs to the likes of Kenya.......there definitely are parallels between the two........but it feels great that the shoe is on the other foot........:giggle: In 1998 we lost a ODI to Kenya.. that's about it. Pakistan lost a home test series to Zimbabwe in the 90s. Losing a ODI is a freak thing. Not Tests. In terms of quality (if you take away shady nature of some) we were better for that era than Pakistan for this era. We had problem with opening. Some of the guys from that era (Srinath, Kumble, Tendulkar, Azharuddin, Sidhu..) did have decent career. Current pakistan lot is very very poor.
Haarkarjeetgaye Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 pakis are wannabe Indians. everything is related to and compared to India. cant live without bollywood..
singhprakash72 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Hope there are no Azhar' date=' Jadeja, Mongia in the current Pak team and the team doctor is not like [b']Dr. Irani. He was more like Dr. Evil from hell...how on earth he got scott free after various testimony is still a mystery.
singhprakash72 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 To sum up Indian team of 90s in short - Above average team at home, pathetic away and too much reliance on few.
Vijay.Sharma Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 To sum up Indian team of 90s in short - Above average team at home, pathetic away and too much reliance on few.Sachin and Anil Kumble
Vilander Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 yeah but we had the f'n best batsman for a decade then. Pak does not have that now.
game_changerr Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 even in 90's someone named Jadeja butuchered their LUGEND Waqar and virtually ended his career....
