Yuvraj Singh picked but why has Umesh Yadav been dropped?

Once again, India appears unsure about how to handle pace. Pakistan might crank out fast bowlers like Maruti cranks out cars, but even when India unearths a bowler of genuine pace, they can’t seem to figure out what to do with him. Yuvraj Singh’s deserved return to the ODI squad to play Australia might have hogged the headlines, but the case of Umesh Yadav should not be overlooked. Yadav has been dropped despite impressing in India’s victorious Tri-nations campaign in the West Indies, where he took seven wickets at 23.85 with a strike-rate of 26. His replacement, Mohammad Shami, played a solitary game in the West Indies without taking a wicket but did take six wickets against Zimbabwe at an average of 30.50 and a strike-rate of 44. Admittedly, both are small sample sizes but given Yadav has played 26 ODIs and Shami 11, small sample sizes are unavoidable. Their overall numbers are also similar, though Yadav again comes out on top. He has an average of 41.58 and a strike-rate of 41.4, while Shami averages 42.50 with a strike-rate of 55.2. Yadav is clearly the more incisive bowler, at least at this early stage in both men’s careers. The reason appears to be one of control. Where Shami, who is more of a seam bowler than an out-an-out fast bowler, scores over Yadav is the one stat MS Dhoni might care about more than any other. Shami’s economy rate is 4.61; Yadav’s is 6.01. Even when Yadav takes wickets, he gives away runs. His economy rate in the West Indies Tri-series was 5.50. Shami gave away 4.15 runs per over in Zimbabwe, though against inferior opposition. As a captain, Dhoni values control, especially in limited overs cricket. He likes to build pressure and force the batsmen in to making mistakes. You don’t have to bowl sides out to win limited-overs matches; you just have to outscore them. A bowler who gives away runs does not build pressure, even if that bowler is more likely to take wickets. Yadav was expensive in the recent Challenger series too. Playing for India Red, he took two wickets in 19 overs while giving away 152 runs – an economy rate of exactly 8. That appears to have convinced the selection panel to go with Shami. The risk here is that India will never learn how to harness Yadav’s talent in ODIs at least. India has always preferred to emphasise line and length and control with the likes of Munaf Patel and even Ishant Sharma. Bowl accurately and within yourself also have a chance at prolonging your career. This is not to decry the virtues of line and length. Dennis Lillee and Sir Richard Hadlee both became much better bowlers after cutting down on their pace and improving their ability to hit the top of off. But in making the trade-off, they never stopped being fast bowlers. This is what India needs to do with Yadav. With the great Glenn McGrath taking over at the MRF pace academy, it is the perfect opportunity for Yadav to learn from a bowler renowned for his metronomic accuracy. There is no doubt that Yadav needs to learn control, but it needs to be done without destroying his confidence and his desire to bowl fast. Bowlers like Yadav don’t come along as often as the Waqars and Wasims and Shoaib Akhtars do in in Pakistan. So he needs to be nurtured and not left to his own devices. For if India can harness his pace in the right way, they will not only have a weapon on even the deadest of pitches, Yadav will serve as a true inspiration to the next generation of want-to-be fast bowlers and prove Pakistan doesn’t have a monopoly on their production in the sub-continent. The rest of the ODI squad holds no surprises. It is essentially the team that won the Champions Trophy, the Tri-series and the series in Zimbabwe. Rohit Sharma is now clearly the preferred choice to open alongside Shikhar Dhawan, while the rest of the batting picks itself. Given the standard of fielding in the Champions Trophy – India were the best fielding side in the tournament – it is no surprise there is no place for Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Zaheer Khan. Adequate replacements for the foursome have seen India hardly miss a beat without them. In Ashwin, India have a bowler who has stepped into Harbhajan’s shoes, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar has shown time and again he has the knack for taking early wickets. Dhawan has become one of the most feared openers in the game in a short time, while India is clearing betting on Rohit’s undoubted talent to fill the other opener’s slot. Yuvraj’s explosiveness coupled with his ability to bowl makes him a handy player to have, and there is a vacant spot in the middle order. Aside from the lack of a third opener, though having one is not always necessary when playing at home, this is a young, balanced and hungry side that Australia will hard pressed to beat.

i strongly Support Umesh and Umesh Yadav is an investment which had just started giving dividends-...........Umesh used to get vital wickets and create breakthrough's, now Shammi and Unadkat would not be able to get that breakthru and finally Australian batsman would enjoi.............recently Umesh took 5 wickets against australia in a practice match at Champions trophy, he clearly showed he is a wicket taking bowler. Against VK even a no 11 bowler can play down overs.......its only when the batsman goes behind Vk does he prize away wickets......his selection is not a good selection. Unadkat 's selection makes sense as ZAk wont play and Unadkat n Suyal are the best left arm pacers we have...so they have picked one though Suyal would ultimately become the better bowler. Shammi has talent so he shud be supported but definitely not at the cost of UMESH...umesh shud have been ahead of Vinay Kumar. BHUVI is the trump card and ishant bowled OK in the t 20 recently so there selections are Good. Umesh shud have been picked for sure and i beleive he will be picked again for ODI's.. do check previous matches Umesh always managed to get the best batsman OUT and hence turning the match upside down. are selectors saying that VK or Shammi or unadkat wl get the best batsman out after BK does his job of picking up wickets with new Ball......All the above bowlers VK shammi Unadkat can fetch wickets with new balls but after it is 10 over old.. they just Trundle at 130K......... at that pace even no 11 batsman can bat. Sorry sandeep Patil u shud not have dropped Umesh.. Umesh wud get the message that he needs to increase his control in ODI's and wud start bowling at 125k and then increase to 133K........and as soon as he bowls 140K and if by chance his ball is hit he wud drop his pace and then INDIA will get another TRUNDLER in its long list of trundlers........... if we got LUCKY and we got a fast bowler - we need to Support him.

My dear friends we have a LONG list of medium pacers and trundlers.........india is very rich as far as trundlers are concerned.. even a siddharth trivedi is as good as Vinay Kumar.....i can give 5 trundlers who are very close to the trundlers that we have picked............ team will not benefit picking up trundlers... Now story will be BK picks a wicket with his swing n pace ...if he is too good he would pick 2 wickets.........then spinners wud pick some wickets .. than some batters of oppostion teams would settle down and then at the end they will murder our trundlers... during this murduring of trundlers a couple of wickets would be taken by our trundler king VK or Shammi or even unadkat but till then the hard would already be done...............

I think its time to give up on Umesh Yadav alltogether for LOI cricket, some bowlers are not cut out for loi cricket and he is the prime example. a fast bowler bowling on SC pitches with no control(and no brain either) is a liability and not an asset.let us save his body for test cricket.

Because Umesh Yadav sucks. I can't stand this guy in limited over games. But VK is even worse. They should have gone for Mohit sharma and couple of other youngsters.
seriously!!.do people not see he is the worst odi bowler right now?

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/records/283868.html He is the third worst in history of ODI cricket in ER.
So you guys are ok with giving everyone's favorite super-talented 'Rohit Sharma' 125+ innings ..y cuz he is technically correct and supertalented... but when it comes to U.Yadav, he is no brainer and worst bowler ever... Bulll$h!tttt!!! U.Yadav is an investment ...He will learn as he goes and will improve on his line and length.. but yours truely V.Kumar, M.Sharmas, Natkhat would never be able to bowl fast!!!

I really dont care about the vinay kumar and unadkats of the world, there is no incentive to play Umesh in ODIs and every incentive to make sure he is fit and in form for our upcoming test series.

Where does Rohit sharma come in here. Umesh Yadav is not an investment a liability. This argument of keeping an useless guy in just because other useless are being included makes no sense.

He is young and talented. No bowler in India can hurry batsman like him. How you can write him off so early is mind boggling. How about givinh him a run to improve, learn , gain experience etc. Could be superb long term investment. Cos if does get it going, he could do something no other player in india could do i.e bowl quick and cause havoc. If its not worth investing in some one who could do a job no other player in whole of india could do, i really dont know what esle to say. Trust me world cup time in aus and if vinnay and BK are getting lined up and whacked in to crowd, we will all be thinking if only we had a 90mph bowler to shake it all up i.e a Yadav Need to give him run and see if can learn, improve and come good in odis. I refer you to warm up game v aus in england as to possible impact

he can do all that in the test matches and continue learning and bowl as fast as he wants.

He isn't dropped imo, probably rested as its a pointless ODI series.. Remember 2 tests vs WI coming up and also the SA tour. Also this.. although the source is TOI

Sources in the BCCI also denied that the Vidarbha pacer has been dropped. "He hasn't been dropped. He will be crucial for the team in the coming months. India will play continuously for the next year or so. Besides, the team is only for three ODIs. He can always make a comeback," a BCCI official said.

He was just starting to show consistency to back up the talent in the recent Tri-series. And then he's dropped. His stats are not great atm but keep in mind he's very inexperienced with only 40 or so One day matches in his career so far including domestics. Wasn't long ago he started playing professionally you can expect him to be a bit wayward at times. The control will come, he has potential.

Actually good point, they've realised a few home and away tests coming up so they may want to save him til then. He has played a few one day's recently and he'll be playing consecutive home & away series over next 8-9 months.

His waywardness is less costly in Tests where he is going to be available for sometime. playing him in ODIs will ruin his test career as well.
Your talking as if we have Mcgraths and Pollocks waiting to play for India.. which Indian bowler isn't wayward? Almost all of them get tonked in death overs. The point with Yadav is his pace can't let batsman just get away with it, on his day he'll run through a side.

Yup the punjab ka puttar gets a free ride back in the team whereas a hard working guy like Umesh Yadav is benched. Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic

But not as much as Umesh Yadav who is soon going to replace Dernbach and Sreesanth as the worst bowler in ODIs in terms of ER. Not like his average/SR are great. They are also poor. High time we realize he is no Brett Lee, Sohaib Akhtar, Shane Bond who were very good even at the start of their career. Let him flourish in the test scenario first. That is where you hone your skills not in one dayers. If anything one dayer will spoil whatever skill you are blessed with. In this Umesh has very little skills.
