Ravi Ashwin 18 matches averages 37.5 with the ball at an economy of 7.5 Sir Jadeja 14 matches averages 47.28 with the ball at an economy of 7.24 Surely most people will agree that these are not good figures. The economy rates are just about ok for an average T20 spinner. But the averages are just too high. Which means these guys are not picking up wickets. Now i am not suggesting that Tambe be inducted into the T20 squad. For all we know he is a Royals home specialist like the rest of some of their players. But surely India should look at other options? Harbhajan Singh has an average of 26 and an economy of 6.36 in 25 matches Ojha has an average of 13 and and economy of 6.20 in 6 matches (masked by performances v minnows) The next two world cups in T20 are in the sub. I just think that India needs to separate its ODI squad from its t20 squad. Sir has just not clicked. Ashwin IMO is living on his IPL reputation which has not materialised in the international arena.
rkt.india Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 Ashwin has not done that great even in IPL since his India debut. Jaddu has never been good in IPL or T20. His bowling does not suit that kind of a game as he is to predictable. He struggles big time on good batting tracks.

His economy is good. Sir Jadeja as you put it does not have great figures in the IPL be it bat or ball. This is a problem in general with Indian cricket IMO. We dont give the format the respect it deserves. that means Raina and Yuvi end up playing test cricket based on ODI performances. Vijay ends up in the ODIs based on test performances.

We need to have specialist T20 players, its a shame that we have so many choices given that we have 2 months of IPL.
Clarke Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 A test specialist is what every team demands. The way it generally works is they are good enough for playing any format: for instance Swann/Ajmal. Warnie & Jumbo were good enough as well in the league.

In the past, some players who have poor domestic records in a certain format were still picked for the national side just because they were good in another format. Examples being Yuvraj, Raina picked for test side. Our T20 side always has a lot of ODI players, despite having lot of players who have done well in T20 format. Rishi Dhawan, Tambe, Mohit Sharma, Stuart Binny, Mishra, Rahul Sharma etc. could all be given a go in T20s.
kubrickian Posted October 5, 2013 Posted October 5, 2013 I disagree about Ravindra Jadeja though. He is an excellent fielder, good hitter and he can be a decent spinner in T20 format as well. He just has to learn to vary his pace instead of darting at the same pace. In T20s, the pitches generally dont assist spin. When the ball starts turning, Jadeja becomes a much more dangerous bowler in any format because the batsmen doesnt know which one turns or doesnt because of his deceptive action and accuracy.

Mohit Sharma actually will not be a T20 bowler because he does not have extra pace, neither has great yorker, but he will be handy in longer format because of his control.

He does not bowl length.
G_B_ Posted October 5, 2013 Author Posted October 5, 2013 The problem i see is that MSD is just going to stick to Sir and Ashwin. As things stand we dont play enough international T20 cricket. I think from now to the World cup in 2014 india are playing like 3-4 T20s. How exactly are we going to know who to pick? One thing i noticed for the Rajasthan Royals is that have many bowling options. Like 6-7. It ensures that the batsman cannot target a bowler for multiple overs. Take yesterday. Binny bowled and over and that was it. Had maybe Tambe been smashed (as leggies are prone to being smashed) Binny would be there for cover.
